HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04112006 - C.76 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: William Walker, M.D., Health Services Director a' ` Costa By: Jacqueline Pigg,Contracts Administrator - - DATE: April 12, 2006 r County SUBJECT: Approval of Grant Agreement#28-750 with the State of California, Office of Traffic Safety SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION(S): Approve and authorize the Health Services Director or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.) to execute on behalf'of the County, Grant Agreement #28-750 (PS0610) with the State of California, Office Of Traffic Safety to pay the County an amount not to exceed $278,926, for the Public Health's Richmond Pedestrian Safety (PEDS) Project for the period from October 1, 2005 through December 31, 2007, FISCAL IMPACT: This Grant Agreement funded by the California State Office of Traffic Safety will result in an amount not to exceed $278,926 for the Richmond Pedestrian Safety(PEDS) Project. No County funds are required. BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S): In-2003, Richmond ranked the highest I ong California cities in its size category for pedestrians under the age of 15; who were killed or injured, and #2 for pedestrians of all ages. Contra Costa County ranks 23`d among California counties for pedestrians under 15 killed or injured. This project builds on previous collaboration between Contra Costa Health Services and the City of Richmond. The goal of the Richmond PEDS Project will increase the capacity of Richmond Police Department to enforce pedestrian-related traffic laws; improve pedestrian crosswalks and signage; increase the knowledge and awareness of drivers and pedestrians regarding pedestrian laws and safety practices. Collision mapping will help identify "hot spot" locations for pedestrian collisions, as sites for law enforcement efforts and crosswalk and signage improvements. Classroom presentations and community workshops will help educate drivers and pedestrians, and a new pedestrian slogan will be developed and distributed community-wide via the West Contra Costa Street Smarts Campaign. I These activities will benefit West Contra Costa Safe Communities Project (WCCSC) partners in San Pablo, El Sobrante, and El Cerrito.
