While I certainly support an effort to reduce obesity, I think limiting people's choices is a paternalistic way to do it. Your focus should be on supporting the schools to offer healthier foods. Furthermore, as a county, -we need to be family-friendly. As a' mom of two very young children (a 3-year-old and 1-year-old) living in Danville, I can honestly say that 'fast food places, specifically drive-through restaurants, are family friendly. I would strongly support an effort to offer healthier fast-food choices WITH drive-throughs. They are truly family friendly! A drive-through offers a great alternative to a parent with toddlers (who wants to go inside with them?) , with a baby sleeping in his carseat (don't want to make him wake up just to go inside) , a parent driving home from sports practice/work/church activity. As silly as it sounds, drive-throughs improve my quality of life, even though I probably only go to a drive-through once/week at the most. I'd like to see•Quizno's, Taco Bell, Pick-up Stix, and other healthier fast-food options welcomed in the county (and Danville in particular) and encouraged to have drive-through windows. Thanks, Sally Peel <cc0@contra.napanet. More times than not, it comes from someone who is trying to either get into my wallet or tell me how to live my.life. This instance is no different. I want to strongly object to any attempt by our county to limit choice and parental rights. That is exactly what Supervisor DeSaulnier is proposing. We don't need some government official telling us under what circumstances we canraise our children when they are participating in a legal activity. The health and welfare of a child is the responsibility of the parent of the child. If a government agency believes that a specific child is at risk, address the circumstances surrounding that child. Don't-try and regulate the activity of all because of the behavior of a few- or even of the many. As far as I can tell, it's still legal to eat food. Until the county bans this--activity, don't try and limit my choices or my ability to raise my children as I see fit. I would like my comments passed on to the County Board of Supervisors. I am writing about a recent story something that happened in your Animal Services Department. Perhaps, you don't remember the case of Bella and the Santa Clara Humane Society. A couple of years ago, the Santa Clara Humane Society adopted out a dog by the name Bella. The owners of Bella had been looking for her at the shelter and had not seen her. Bella was adopted to another family. Public outcry was enormous. The Humane Society claimed they couldn't do anything about it. The public did do something about it. They kept in the news. They made the Humane Society look bad. Many people refused to contribute to the Humane Society after this. The executive director looked foolish. The adopting family looked like cruel, horrible, noncaring people. The news media may make a field day out of this fiasco. I am asking ABC7 to continue to pursue this by publicizing this misdeed until this wrong is made right. You might wonder why I care... I have pets. They are my best friends. And, when you lose your best friend, you lose everything. It hurts. This case doesn't have to turn out that way. Libby didn't have to lose her best friend. She didn't have to be hurt. The Animal Services Department told Libby she should come get her dog. Libby communicated with the Animal Services Department when she could not make it. In any case, she got there before the five day waiting period was over, which was the policy stated on the website. However, Animal Services just said that the website information was wrong. It seems that the Animal Services Department is more afraid of the new owner than the original owner. It makes me wonder if this is the case because Libby is a woman of color. I wonder if there is some discrimination in this situation. Lt. Nancy Anderson did a poor job of handling the interview on television. She really looked like a fool answering the questions. Animal Services was wrong in their handling of this situation. And, now, it needs to be fixed.
