APPROVE Resolution No. 2005/247 recognizing and commending the Friends of El Sobrante Library
upon the refurbishing and reopening of the Friends' Book House.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
BACKGROUND:
The Friends of El Sobrante Library utilize a small structure, formerly a residence, on the property of the
El Sobrante Library to conduct book sales, which promote reading in the local community and generate
supplemental revenue for the El Sobrante Library. Over time, this structure has come to be known as
the Friends' Book House.
In FY 2004-05 a $50,000 budget was established in the General Services Department (GSD)for
demolition of the Book House based on a finding by the Building Inspection Department that the
building was structurally deficient.
After several meetings between the Friends of El Sobrante Library and County staff, further analysis
revealed that while a portion of the Book House did need to be demolished, a significant portion of the
Book House was structurally stable and could be preserved. Using the $50,000 demolition budget and
volunteer resources, GSD and the Friends of El Sobrante Library refurbished the Book House so that
the remaining portion of the structure can continue to be used for book sales.
