ADDENDUM TO ITEM D.4
May 17, 2005
On this day,the Board of Supervisors CONSIDERED accepting a presentation from Dr. William
Walker, M.D., Contra Costa Health Services Director, of the Contra Costa Community Health
Indicators Report.
Dr. Walker said it would be necessary to talk about developing partnerships with selected cities
on the health of Contra Costa County.
Supervisor Glover said he is concerned about the health disparities shown on the Indicators
report for the African-American community in Contra Costa County. He said he would like to
see more needs for care and prevention to reduce health disparities for the African-American
population in Contra Costa County and feels significant community involvement is necessary.
Dr. Walker said he is working with employees from Health Services Department who recently
attended an African-American Summit in Oakland, and noted Contra Costa County does not
have the wealth of the African-American organized effort that Oakland does. Dr. Walker said he
would try to repeat this effort in Contra Costa County.
Supervisor Gioia said the Indicators Report would help the Board in prioritizing the budget, and
agreed with Supervisor Glover on the need to reduce health disparities. Supervisor Gioia also
requested Dr. Walker divide the data among the Asian community in Contra Costa County,
instead of grouping all the Asian population one.
Supervisor Gioia noted no implementation of the new vending machine policy adopted by the
Board of Supervisors on December 14,2005 (SD.3), and commented Health Services
Department should have been the first to put this into operation.
Supervisor DeSaulnier suggested getting a report card format that would show the Contra Costa
County Health Services Department's initiatives to address health disparities by recruiting and
retaining diverse workforce, cultural competence training and access to multiple languages in the
Contra Costa County.
Dr. Walker suggested placing health disparities on the Family and Human Services calendar and
reporting periodically to the Board of Supervisors.
Chair Uilkema noted Domestic Violence was not mentioned in the Indicators Report. She
requested Dr. Walker include this in the Indicators report as this could provide information for
the budget.
The Board asked for public opinion. The following spoke:
