HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05172005 - 2005 RES 290 IN THE MATTER RECOGNIZING RESOLUTION NO. 2005/290 LINDSAY WILDLIFEMUSEUM'S 50x"ANNIVERSARY,AND DISTRICT 2 ARTISTS AFFILIATED WITH LINDSAY WILDLIFE MUSEUM WHEREAS,Contra Costa County recognizes artpassages. a collection ofartfrom contra costa countyas an exhibition program designed to create an opportunity for artists to show their work to a larger public, to increase community awareness of and familiarity with County artists, to form relationships with regional art organizations,and to attract potential buyers for.County artists'work;and WHEREAS,The Arts&Culture Commission of Contra Costa'County and Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors are celebrating Lindsay Wildlife Museum's 50th Anniversary this year by presenting an exhibition of artwork created ley artists affiliated with Lindsay Wildlife Museum called, The Art of Keeping it Wild;and WHEREAS,Lindsay Wildlife Museum was founded by Alexander"Sandy"Lindsay,who started teaching children about nature in the early 1950s. Lindsay brought together parents to Help iti:his efforts and incorporated the Diablo Junior Museum Association in June 1955 using:his home,Seven Hills Ranch,as the first site of die museum.In 1905,with the help of the City of Walnut Creek, the"museum moved to,an'unoccupied 5,000 square foot water pump house in Walnut Creek's Larkey Park where tlu museum acquired a permanent collection of live,non-releasable wild animals and natural history objects I'ecple carne to the museum to get help for injured and orphaned wild animals,and in 1970 a forrrl wildlife rel���ilitatiotr prcagram was started-- the-first of its hind in they United States-Til the early 1990s the useum;and the community worked together to raise fian.ds and:build anew,28,000 square E't of buileling where the museum.exhibits,non- �. . . releasable wild aiiiii� s and the ix3Idlife rehabilitation hospital are currently housed;and WHEREAS;Lindsay Wildlife Museum currently serves more than 1.00;000 vis>t rs each year,including 4(3,(300 sclsool children.Approximately 700 volunteers are active.iti the museuMs work; contrihitting more than 120,000 hours of service each year to education,wildlife care,museum 61. fundraising and soutreach. The museum operates the oldest.and one of the largest..tvildlite` lI'bil ration hospitals;in the Untied States, treating more than h�000 injured and ctrphaned wild animals each year 'ancl WHEREAS,Individual:artists are participating in the art pastae nlisflict eatltr`brt art The Art of Keeping It Wild,including:Glynda Dixon,Kathy Gyorfi,Susan Heckly,Margrete He.sing,Elizabeth Maffeo Koval, Ruth Mullin,Brian-Murphy,John Osmer,Wendy Sparks,Jeff Torquemada,Joe Watson and Lisa Yount.; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby declare the above artists,and Lindsay Wildlife Museum,are treasures of our County and region, and urges residents to continue to support the artistic and creative`endeavors of these individuals and this museum.
