SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):
Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee (Wendel Brunner, M.D.) to
execute on behalf of the County,Contract#28-706-3 with Public Health Foundation Enterprises,Inc.,
to pay the County in an amount not to exceed $37,540, for the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's (CDC) Emerging Infections Program - Retail Foods Project, for the period from
December 30, 2004 through December 29, 2005. In accordance with the term of the agreement,
County agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Contractor from and against any and all liability,loss,
expense (including reasonable attorneys' fees), or claims for injury or damages arising out of the
performance of this Agreement.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This Contract is funded 100%by a CDC cooperative agreement for the Emerging Infections Program
through the Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc. No County cost is included.
BACKGROUND/REASON S FOR RECOMMENDATION (S):
This project is needed to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella and
Campylobacter from the meat and poultry food supply in Contra Costa County, Alameda, and San
Francisco areas. This data may be used to develop intervention programs to stem the high prevalence
of antimicrobial resistance, if detected.
On April 20, 2004, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract#28-706-2 with the Public Health
Foundation Enterprises, Inc., for microbiological testing, by the Department's Public Health
Laboratory, for the presence of Salmonella and Campylobacter from the meat and poultry food
supply.
Approval of Contract #28-706-3, will allow the Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc., to
continue to pay the County on a fee for service basis for laboratory microbiological testing services,
including, but not limited to, personnel time, supplies, and food samples utilized in the testing,
through December 29, 2005.
