CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
April 26, 2005 Adjournment
On this day the Board adjourned in memory of Albert Roux.Compaglia. Albert
Roux Compaglia died April 18,2005 in Walnut Creek at the age of 88.He was preceded in
death in May 2003 by Rita Davi Compaglia, his wife of 62 years.Born in San Francisco,
Al moved to Martinez in 1919 at age two when his father,a cook at the Fior d'Italia and
other restaurants in North Beach, opened the first of three restaurants he came to own in
what was then the largest"downtown"in Contra Costa County.Al attended Martinez
public schools, graduating from Alhambra High School in 1935.He attended Sacramento
Junior College and the University of California.A strong athlete,he earned recognition at
the college level as a pole vaulter. However,World War II defined him.In his words,he
was,"relieved of books and civilian life and processed through Officer's Candidate School
in a blur, all with a young wife and little baby following along from post to post until my
unit was assembled and shipped to the Pacific. When we made our first landing I realized
that we weren't there to play refinery league softball. It never got better.I was the greenest
company commander perhaps ever. Some very tough sergeants ran my guys and I think
sergeants won that war.I learned from that."Al worked for 35 years in various industrial
relations, labor mediation and public affairs capacities for the federal government, retiring
in 1978.Influenced by the example of his mother,Anna,a member of the Irwin family,
early California pioneers, and his father,Dominico, who immigrated to California in 1909
from Montecchio Precalcino(Vicenza),Italy,he developed a strong sense of obligation to
his community.
