BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS The Contra Costa County Watershed Atlas (Atlas) is a large format, full color, 150-page book of maps, statistics and text about the 28 major watersheds in the County. Though focused on the state of natural ecosystems on the watershed scale, the Atlas also provides information about the human community and the county as an eco-region. The Atlas was presented to the Board of Supervisors on December 9, 2003. The Atlas was prepared by the Community Development Department in cooperation with the Public Works Department and other members of the Contra Costa Watershed Forum. Additional background on the Contra Costa Watershed Forum and the collaborative process used to create the Atlas was provided in that report. The Contra Costa County Community Development Department and the Contra Costa Watershed Forum Watershed recently received two awards for the Contra Costa County Watershed Atlas. 1. The National Association of Environmental Professionals honored the Community Development Department and the Contra Costa Watershed Forum with a National Environmental Excellence Award for Education Excellence. 2. The Northern Section of the California Chapter of the American Planning Association honored the Community Development Department and the Contra Costa Watershed Forum with an Outstanding Planning Award for Comprehensive Planning, Large Jurisdiction. The Atlas now qualifies for the statewide pool of APA awards. Community Development Staff have created an electronic version of the Atlas that is available on compact disk (CD). The CD and printed Atlas can be purchased from the Community Development department. A copy of the CD has been provided to each Supervisor.
