HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05182004 - PR.1 Ai In the Matter of Resolution No. 2004/2.11 REINFORCING THE COUNTY'S COMMITMENT TO THE MONTH OF MAYAS "AIDS A RARENESS MONTH"IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS, the World Health Organization estimates that there are 42,000,000 individuals living with HIV or AIDS worldwide; and WHEREAS, after more than twenty years into the AIDS pandemic there is still no cure and it is estimated that more than 4, 900 Contra Costa residents have been infected with HIV or AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic; and WHEREAS, there have been nearly 2,500 cases of AIDS reported and more than 1,534 AIDS- related deaths reported among Contra Costa residents since the first AIDS case was diagnosed in Contra Costa County in 1982; and WHEREAS, continuing education and prevention efforts are more crucial than ever because many people who are infected do not know of their HIV status, and many who are HIV positive are not in regular care; and WHEREAS, reducing the stigma of HIV/AIDS,promoting HIV testing, and promoting early intervention treatment for persons who are HIV positive are important parts of prevention; and WHEREAS, HIV/AIDS remains a continuing health crisis in all communities in Contra Costa County, especially affecting a growing proportion of women,young people, and significantly impacting people of color; and WHEREAS, Supervisors Gioia and Glover and the communities of West County and.Fast County have established Task Forces to address issues related to HIV and AIDS; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County first proclaimed the month of May as AIDS Awareness Month in 2000. NOW, .THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the.Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California does hereby proclaim the County's continued commitment and support to individuals touched by HIV/AIDS during the month of May 2004 and hereby calls upon all citizens,parents, government agencies, elected officials, businesses,private institutions, non-profit agencies, religious communities, hospitals, and schools to use our collective powers to encourage dialogue about HIV/AIDS, support community efforts at HIVprevention,provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS education and respond compassionately to people living with HIV .PASSED by unanimous vo of the.Board Membe resent on this 18th day of May 2004. r` C airman 'Federal D.
