SUBJECT: Letter of endorsement for application for funding from the California 21st Century
High School After School Safety and Enrichment Teens (ASSETS) Program
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) ,& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONtS):
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Chair of the Board of Supervisors to execute a letter endorsing an application
by the County After School 4 All Collaborative for funding provided by the California 21st Century High School
After School Safety and Enrichment Teens (ASSETS) program.
BACKGROUND:
Funding has been made available from the State of California Department of Education based on grant funding
from the U.S. Department of Education. The Mt. Diablo Unified School District, who will serve as fiscal agent for
this new after school program has requested a letter from the County board of Supervisors in support of its
application. The requested amount of the grant application will be $600,000.
The funding from the grant will be used to pay for the operation of a new After School Program at Mt. Diablo High
School, Pittsburg High School and Riverside High School. The grant supports student learning by providing a
program that integrates academics, enrichment, recreation and a safe healthy environment.

Enrichment for Teens(ASSETS) Program
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is in support of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District(M€JSD) applying as the fiscal
agent for the purpose of implementing and enhancing the California 21" Century High School
After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens(ASSETs)Program at the fallowing schools,
contingent upon the availability of funding,

• Riverside Nigh School

Safety and Enrichment for Teens(ASSETS) Program will be to provide academic, enrichment,

California 21'Century High School After School Safety and Enrichment for'Peens (ASSETS)
Program and support Mount Diablo Unified School District as the lead agency in the California
21't Century High School After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens(ASSETS) Program
grant application process.
We have worked with the Contra Costa County After School 4 All Collaborative which includes,
Antioch Unified, John Swett Unified, Pittsburg Unified, Mount Diablo Unified and West Contra
Costa Unified over the last three years, to implement comprehensive academic, enrichment and
healthy after school programs.
We are eager to have the opportunity to enhance and expand academic, enrichment, nutrition,
youth development, cultural and parent-community educational experiences for students and
their families in the After School Programa
We have a sincere interest in the students and families in these neighborhoods and are committed
to the After School 4 All Collaborative's efforts and goals.
Specifically, we commit to providing:
• Staff time to attend planning and management meetings
• Staff'expertise and resources
• Staff Representative to continue to serve on After School Program Executive
Committee/Board, Advisory Board and other relevant work grows
® Coordination and outreach for grants and sustainability
We believe that through collaborative efforts among, schools, city and communities, quality and
comprehensive after school services for students and families can be achieved.
