Rupf, Sheriff Gaeta DATE: April 5, 2004 County SUBJECT: Acceptance of Completed Peace Officer Monument from the Sheriff's Posse of Contra Costa SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDATION: ACCEPT the completed Peace Officer Monument from the Sheriff's Posse of Contra Costa. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT: NONE III. BACKGROUND: On February 23, 2000, the Board of Supervisors accepted the donation of the Contra Costa Peace Officer Monument from the Sheriff's Posse. On February 27, 2001, the Board authorized construction of the Peace Officer Monument on County-owned property located at the corner of Muir Road and Glacier Drive in Martinez, across Muir Road from the Sheriff's Office Field Operations Building. The Contra Costa Peace Officer Monument project broke ground on January 30, 2002 and was dedicated on May 17, 2002, in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Week. The final touches, including landscaping, at the monument site were completed in mid-2003. Completion of the Contra Costa Peace Officer Monument project was possible only because of the commitment, dedication, diligence and generosity of many people and organizations. Sheriff's Charities, Inc., the Sheriffs Posse of Contra Costa and its Executive Board members spearheaded fund raising efforts, collecting over$150,000. The broad-based Steering Committee brought together to oversee the planning and completion of this project consisted of representatives from virtually every level of government, including two members of the County Board of Supervisors, a State Assemblyperson, a State Senator and a U.S. Congressperson. The Steering committee also included representatives from the public and private sector of organized labor. Contra Costa County provided the land, the State Department of Parks and Recreation provided over$100,000 in grant funding, cash donations from a variety of people were received specifically for this project and an array of businesses provided labor and/or materials at reduced or no cost. This has been a community project from the beginning; and now the community is enjoying the end product.
