Contra Costa County )
WHEREAS,Libraries promote reading and literacy in the community by providing books,preschool
literacy experiences,literacy tutoring,and other resources to foster the love of books and reading for
children and adults of all ages; and
WHEREAS, Libraries help children succeed in school by providing after school programs and
homework help resources to support their educational needs; and
WHEREAS, Libraries are centers for education and information and as such, they provide the
community with opportunities and resources for lifelong learning; and
WHEREAS, Libraries support democracy by creating an informed citizenry and by ensuring that its
resources are available to anyone regardless of age,race,gender or socioeconomic background;and
WHEREAS,the Contra Costa County Library joins the nation in celebrating National Library Week,
.April 18-25,2004, with the theme Power Your Body& Mind fa your libraryC�, and is offering
over 35 health and educational programs in local libraries during National Library Week; and
WHEREAS,the Contra Costa County Library will have a Fun Run/Walk at the conclusion of National
Library Week., April 25, 2004,as a fundraiser for children's books;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra
Costa, California, proclaims April 18 -- 25, 2004 as "National Library Week" in Contra Costa
County and thanks the staff and volunteers of the Contra Costa County Library for their dedicated
service to our community.
PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 20d Day of April 2004.
