RECOMMENDATION
Accept the Contra Costa County Library 2003 Annual Volunteer and Community Partners Report.
Acknowledge and honor the recipients of the 2003 Contra Costa County Library Volunteer and Community
Partner"Special Recognition Awards."
BACKGROUND
Supervisorial District 1:
El Cerrito Library
Pauline Sze -In recognition of Pauline Sze who performs a variety of assignments at the El Cerrito Library such
as maintaining the information bulletin board and displays in the children's area, and assembling class visit
materials. She carries out each job thoroughly and conscientiously, and she is prompt,reliable and enthusiastic.

El Sobrante Library
Michael Baefsky—In recognition of Michael Baefsky for directing the community process to develop a large,
under-used area in front of the El Sobrante Library into an attractive seating and reading area for families.
West County Senior Outreach Services and "Books for the Homebound"volunteers: Valli Sendan, Ronald
Paige, Meredith Martin, Willi Sarmiento, Suzanne Radford, Ruth Marsh and Zolita McKeon -In recognition of
Valli Sendan, Ronald Paige,Meredith Martin, Willi Sarmiento, Suzanne Radford, Ruth Marsh and Zolita
McKeon for their involvement in the innovative community partnership between the Contra Costa County
Library and the"Elders' Actualization Project"of West County Senior Outreach Services. By participating in
the"Books for the Homebound"program,they are enriching the lives of frail, low-income, elderly clients by
providing much needed social and intellectual stimulation.

Supervisorial District 2
Crockett Library
Inez Santucci, Ruth James and Gail Varney—In recognition of Inez Santucci,Ruth James and Gail Varney for
their unflagging dedication. As officers of the Friends of the Crockett Library for several years,they have worked
tirelessly to raise money to purchase new library books, shelving and make other improvements to the library.
They constantly raise awareness of the value of the library in the community and provide enthusiastic support for
all the library's programs and activities.
Martinez Library
Jeanne McEwan—In recognition of Jeanne McEwan, "Stories To Go"volunteer at the Martinez Early
Childhood Center. Jeanne is an enthusiastic participant in this outreach program that extends the library into the
ay-care community.
Moraga Library
Tate Baugh, Carolyn Gow, Nora Llewellyn and Staci Sherbert—In recognition of Tate Baugh, Carolyn Gow,
Nora Llewellyn and Staci Sherbert for their volunteer service at the Moraga Library in partnership with the
Acalanes Union High School District. Their assistance with shelving children's books and videos, which are
always in high demand, is greatly appreciated.
Mary Zann—In recognition of Mary Zann, art coordinator, who has for several years dedicated her time and
efforts to beautifying the walls of the Moraga Library with the work of local artists. Mary has worked tirelessly
to see that the walls in the exhibit area are always adorned and to give local artists a showcase for their talents.
Orinda Library
Vina Pringle - In recognition of Vina Pringle for faithfully volunteering every Monday morning at the Orinda
Library, assisting the staff in preparing for the week ahead and willingly undertaking any task assigned to her.
Pinole Library
Carroll Beard and Antonio Medrano -In recognition of Carroll Beard and Antonio Medrano for their dedication
to the Pinole Library. Carroll serves as the Pinole Friend's President and Library Commissioner and he has
continued to provide the library with much needed revenue and recognition in the community. Antonio
volunteers as an after-school monitor and as an inspirational tutor for high school students in Advanced
Placement government and history classes.
Supervisorial District 3
Brentwood Library
Donna Coker and Marsha Geeser—In recognition of Donna Coker and Marsha Geeser for the wonderful
service they have provided as"Book Buddy"read-aloud volunteers for the past three years. Patrons know when
they drop off their child with Donna or Marsha,their child will experience the magic of books and reading.
Danville Library
Danville Library "Stories To Go"volunteers: Carolyn Kramer, Millie Day, Kris Lamanno, Renee Lam, Jean
Taylor and Carol Piras-In recognition of the Danville Library's"Stories To Go"volunteers for their dedicated
service in promoting literacy through their story time sessions at Danville pre-schools.
San Ramon Library
Vanessa Peng—In recognition of Vanessa Peng for her exemplary volunteer service to the San Ramon Library.
Vanessa has assisted with cleaning and recovering books,making nametags and keeping the children's picture
book area in order.
Bob Smith—In recognition of Bob Smith for eight years of dedication and service to the San Ramon Library. In
addition to being an invaluable part of the morning team, Bob is a jazz enthusiast who also helps at the annual
concerts and programs.

Walnut Creek Library
Walnut Creek Friends of the Library Book Sorter Teams: Bobbie Gillis, Toni Finger, Beatrice Jepsen, Betty
Todd, Jonnie Semrad, Barbara Branton, Lucy Finsand, Barbara Malmgren, l4nna Mae Mahoney, Pat Moal,
Lillian Ruppenthal, Mary Ogden and Denise Mathews -In recognition of the Book Sorter Teams of the Friends
of the Walnut Creek Library for their expertise and commitment to making the sale of books donated to the
library a major source of revenue that ensures continuous support and improvement of the Walnut Creek
Library.
Ygnacio Valley Library
Lottie Kornfeld-In recognition of Lottie Kornfeld for superior talents and gracious willingness to work on a
wide variety of projects that advance the goals of the Ygnacio Valley Library in serving its users.
Supervisorial District 4
Clayton Library
Yange and Pete Painter — In recognition of Vange and Pete Painter for their dedication to the Clayton
Community Library since 1995. Vange, serving as the "Book Buddy" read-aloud program advisor has
volunteered 1,111 hours and has delighted many children with her storytelling abilities. Pete has volunteered
1,291 hours and is responsible for checking in, shelving, and sensitizing library materials. Thank you, Vange
and Pete, for your outstanding commitment to the Clayton Community Library.
Dave Atkinson—In recognition of Dave Atkinson, who began volunteering prior to the opening of the library in
1995. Dave has served as the Treasurer for the Clayton Community Library Foundation, tutor to several
students, Computer Task Force member and web site manager. He also assists with the bi-annual Foundation
book sales, has made wooden shelving for the book sales, assists at special events, creates and hangs signs, and
coordinates the buy-a-brick fundraising project. Thank you, Dave, for your priceless contributions to the
Clayton Community Library.
Pleasant Hill Library
Ellen Monaghan and Norman Cox—In recognition of Ellen Monaghan and Norman Cox for their commitment
to checking and repairing audio-visual materials for the Pleasant Hill Library. The ever-popular videotapes
receive a prolonged shelf life due to the patience and dedication of Ellen and Norman.
Project Second Chance
Marilyn Morris -In recognition of Marilyn Morris for her outstanding leadership of the Project Second Chance
nonprofit fundraising and advocacy Board, PSC, Inc.
Ken Bellingham - In recognition of Ken Bellingham for his very generous contribution of time and talent to
Project Second Chance students who want to use computers to improve their basic literacy skills and for
demonstrating to their tutors all that can be accomplished by using the program's computer learning lab.
Wilruss Trust"Stories To Go" and"Reach Out and Read"Programs
Judy Karg-In recognition of Judy Karg for her service with the Stories To Go program. Every week for three
years Judy has enthusiastically provided story times to children at the George Miller Head Start in Concord.
Mary Beth Lilly-In recognition of Mary Beth Lilly for her work as a Reach Out and Read and Stories To Go
volunteer over the last year. She has reached hundreds of children through her volunteer work,providing
children in Concord with great stories and a connection to the library.

Antioch Library
Lillie Rogers—In recognition of Lillie Rogers for mending, gluing,taping and taking such good care of our
library books. We appreciate your dedication and hard work. Thank you for being part of the Antioch Library
team!
Bay Point Library
Patricia Mickelwait, Raul Moreno, Thuyet Nguyen&Kimberly Sanders—In recognition of Patricia Mickelwait,
Raul Moreno, Thuyet Nguyen&Kimberly Sanders for their outstanding talents and continued service at the Bay
Point Library Homework Help Center.

Pittsburg Library
Brandon Baker, Courtney LaFrades&Howard Polansky-In recognition of their dedication as Pittsburg
Library Homework Help volunteers and for the many hours spent helping children of all ages and adults as well
with their homework and educational endeavors
Technology for Teens in Transition
Bob Higgins and Irvin Starr—In recognition of Bob Higgins and Irvin Starr for their long-time dedication to the
teens participating in the"Technology for Teens in Transition"program located in juvenile hall. They have
taught computer skills to hundreds of kids and have touched many lives by listening,teaching and caring. Their
giving spirit is an inspiration to all!
Wilruss Trust"Stories To Go" and"Reach Out and Read"Programs
Kathy Snell-In recognition of Kathy Snell for her commitment to serving the children of Pittsburg and
Brentwood through Reach Out and Read and Stories To Go. Her love of literature and her enthusiasm for the
programs have touched many lives in these communities.
