FISCAL IMPACT: This contract is included in the Health Services Department Enterprise I budget . REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND: For several years the County has contracted with registries to provide temporary medical, professionals to assist Contra. Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers during peak loads, temporary absences, and emergency situations . There is a nationwide nursing and healthcare staff shortage, and in spite of persistent efforts to recruit nurses and other healthcare staff, the Department has experienced great difficulty in filling any vacant positions . Therefore, the Department has had to rely heavily on the registry services in order to provide quality nursing care for patients. On September 17, 2002, the Board of Supervisors approved Contract #26- 458 with Access Nurses to provide temporary nursing services, as requested by the Department, for the period from September 1, 2002 through August 31, 2003 .
