Describe the project your group plans to do. Where will the project take place? This Summer, the PPSCC El Pueblo Summer Program will learn the routine features of books and book handling. young children will learn important things about books, such as in English, we read from left to right and from the top to the bottom of a page, that words are separated by spaces, and that sentences begin with capital letters and end with some kind of puncutation mark. The children in the program will be given pre-kindergarten lessens, focusing on knowing many letter names, having the skills to recognize and name a number of letters, enhancing their ability to read. This is done by letter recognization knowing how to connect the individual letters and sometimes combination of letters with the sounds of spoken words. Children will have the opportunities to learn to identify letters, to write letters and to find out how letters function to represent the sounds in words. The alphabet will be at child's eye level and large alphabet cards and blocks will be used, in conjunction with the child's own letter crafts. There will be a writing center where children can go to experiment with different writing tools, along with alphabet books to be read aloud and alphabet songs to sing with the children. Children will also be exposed to Phonemic awareness, which is the ability to notice, think about and work with sounds in spoken words. We are aware that before children learn to read print, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work, thus, learning that words are made up of speech sounds (phonemes) . The Pittsburg Pre-School & Community Council, Inc. , is located adjacent to the El Pueblo Housing Development and the children will have the opportunity to explore their neighborhood through the short field trips that are scheduled throughout the summer. 2. What problems or opportunity do you want to address with your Summer Program? Children will be offered the opportunity to learn to read by developing their awareness skills before entering kindergarten. They will have the opportunity to: repeat rhyming songs and poems, identify rhymes and generate rhyming words when playing a rhyming game. Recognize common sounds at the beginning of a series of words (alliteration) , Isolate the beginning sounds in familiar words. Children will be able to choose books to read aloud that focus on sounds, rhyming and alliteration. They will be able to sing or say a familiar nursery rhyme or song and will be invited to make up new verses of familiar songs or rhymes. Children will learn how to handle books appropriately, recognize book features, such as the front and back covers, the top and bottom of a book, recognize that books have titles, writte by an author and have drawings done by an illustrator, recognize that printed letters and words run from left to right across the page and from top to bottom. Children will learn with help, how to hold a book, shown that we read from front to back, that we go through a book page by page and for older children, point out features of books, such as the front cover and the title. This summer program will include a variety of troop activities focusing on math, science, healthy living, camping experiences and field trips. More than 40 girls and young women will be involved in this special surnmer program. Most of the girls who will be participating are already involved in girl Scouts and currently reside in the housing development sites. Additional efforts will be made to recruit more girls between the ages of 6 through 17 years old from these sites. The Girl Scout troop activities will include: + Each girl attending a troop meeting once a week for 2-hours * Each troop meeting for six weeks during the summer session, f Two part-time paid Girl Scout leaders providing supervision * Each girl participating in field trips to ■ San Jose High Tech Museum • Lawrence Hall of Science ■ let Skating in Oakland. All necessary supplies and recognitions earned for the girls will be purchased through this grant, What pMblema or opportunities do you-want to addral wM your Summer program? Recent studies show that girls are not fully engaged or encouraged in math and science. Economics and gender still determine the majority of the math and science professionals in our communities and country, The current disparity between women and met) pursuing careers in math and science is an issue that Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area is Housing Authority of the County of Centra Costa 3133 Estudillo Street Martinez,CA 94553 2 Housing Authority of the County of Contra Costa Girl Scouts of San Francisco Bay Area Grant Application and Proposal 25 May 2003 addressing. Girl Scouts is committed to developing educational programming that will encourage girls and young women in math and science and thereby create an impact on reducing the econornic gender gap which challenges women in these fields. Another critical issue facing girls today is self image and body image. Research shows Haat girls are becoming overly concerned with their looks and self image at an even younger age, causing them to develop lower self esteem and eating disorders. These eating disorders can lead to severe health problems causing abnormal development and serious learning disabilities, As the largest non-profit organization in the country dedicated to serving girls and young women, Girl Scouts has accepted the challenge and is committed to developing the self-potential and developing values for the girls and young women living in the communities we serve. By addressing the issues of encouraging girls to excel in math and science and promoting healthy living, we intend to help girls realize their maximum potential in both education and self esteem which in turn will produce better citizens contributing to our society. This program provides girls and young women with the opportunity to actively participate in programming which might not otherwise be available to them.. Field trips to science and technology centers will help encourage girls' interests and broaden their horizons by developing an understanding and building an awareness of math and science and how it relates to their individual lives. Introducing these girls to a wide variety of educational resources in the community will help to develop a greater sense of self worth, increase their self esteem and provide valuable learning experiences. Likewise, our program specialties at Camp Bothin will give the girls an opportunity to meet positive adult role models, and experience self-discovery and personal growth in an outdoor environment, The experience of attending Camp Bothin, meeting other{girl Scout sisters and learning new skills, all contributes to the process of a creating an empowered self image and positive youth development. Describe the project your group plans to do. Where will the project take place? The YMCA will provide the Rodeo Summer Enrichment Program that will offer its participants the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of activities and experiences in a well supervised., safe environment. This day camp program will be housed at the Rodeo Community YMCA, 2 California Street in Rodeo. The program will generally run from 1#tarn -4pm, but may vary due to the programming scheduled for the weep. The program will serve youth ages 6-12 years of age. There may also be teen participants in the program who serve as junior leaders. Youth who participate in the program will be engaged in a number of on site and off site activities geared to stimulate and motivate participants to engage in constructive activities involving social, educational, and physical development that also build character. As with all YMCA programs, the character values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility, are an important part of the daily routine. Field trips that are now being planned may include baseball games, training camps, resident camp, swimming and water activities, amusement parks, community outings, educational institutions and other entertainment venues, While on site, youth will have the opportunity to participate in sports and other physical activities, creative arts and crafts projects, develop social interaction and team building skills, play games, cook, and have character discussions. 2. "What problems or opportunity do you want to address with your Summer Program? Summer is a time when many youth have nothing to do and that leads to them getting involved in risky behavior that can jeopardize their safety. Youth who are left unsupervised can also prove to be problems in the community disrupting businesses and getting involved with crimes. The YMCA has a proven track record of providing youth with a program that not only keeps them out of trouble and risky behavior, but also develops their physical, mental and spiritual growth through constructive activities. The involvement of the youth in YMCA programs also provides them with the opportunity to give back to the community. The YMCA is involved with community clean-ups and other community projects that make the Rodeo community a better place to live. 3. Who will be involved in carrying out the project? What will they do? (Phase outline the activities to be completed and who is responsible for completing them) The West Contra Costa Branch of the YMCA of the East Bay is managed by Don Lau, Vice President/Executive Director, who oversees the budget and supervision of the Rodeo Community YMCA. Vincent Goldman, Associate Program Director, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the summer day camp program. Vincent has served in that role since the YMCA began operation of the Rodeo site in July 2001. Vincent will be supported by two (2) recreation staff members during the summer program. The program will include"off site" activities including field trips to baseball games, educational and cultural programs, swimming, outdoor environmental education sites and other experiences that will broaden the youth's awareness of the surrounding community. "On site"experiences will include competitive sports activities, sports instruction, arts and crafts, board and table games, cooking, and other recreational activities. There will also be opportunities for the teens to provide leadership and support for program activities during the summer. All activities will also include character development"chalk talks"to reinforce the YMCA's character values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. 4. How will you know if your project is successful? How will our development or client{s) be better off as a result of your program? Success of the YMCA's rodeo Summer Enrichment Program will be based on. • A minimum of 30 youth being served weekly by the Rodeo Summer Enrichment Program. • A variety of activities will be offered that include educational, physical, recreational, social, and spiritual development for the program participants. • The program will provide at least 1 weekly"off site" field trip. • Survey of parents and participants will indicate overall satisfaction with the program. • The program will work collaboratively with other summer programs in the community to maximize limited community resources available in the community. The residents will be better off because the youth in the community will have a safe, supportive program to attend during the summer that will offer them creative and exciting activities every day. This will cut down on risky behavior and disruptive activities in the community.
