Acknowledge and honor the recipients of the 2002 Contra Costa County Library Volunteer and Community Partner"Special Recognition Awards." BACKGROUND Supervisorial District 1: El Sobrante Library Peg Boettger - In recognition of Peg Boettger, organizer and discussion leader of the El Sobrante Library's new reading discussion group, "The Remainders." With this one new library program, Peg has brought together community members with a love of books and reading and added lively discussion and fellowship Sart Pablo Watershed Neighbors Education and Restoration Society(SPAWN) -In recognition of the San Pablo Watershed Neighbors Education and Restoration Society for their landscaping and maintenance of the San Pablo Creek behind the El Sobrante Library with California native trees,shrubs and wildflowers. We appreciate their ongoing commitment to community education and the preservation of water and wildlife Kensington Library Esther.Fill-In recognition of Esther Hill,President of the Kensington Friends of the Library. Esther is commended for her ability to bring the old and new leaderships of the Kensington Friends together smoothly and effectively and for her thoughtful recognition of all who contribute their time and energy to the Kensington Friends of the Library. Linda,herself a writer,has used her extensive contacts with ether Bay Area writers to plan a series of illuminating and entertaining book talks that have been immensely popular in the community. Pat.Bayer, Jana Browne and Nancy Mills—In recognition of Pat Bayer, Jan Browne and Nancy Mills for their commitment and dedication to the Friends of the Lafayette Library. Nancy Mills has volunteered in the Book Room since 1985,giving special attention to the children's section, Pat Boyer has volunteered in the Book Room since 1988,with special interest in the Romance and Mystery paperback sections;and, Jan Browne has produced outstanding Friends newsletters. Together,their efforts have contributed significantly to the success of the Friends of the Lafayette Library. Moraga Library Jan Cordes-In recognition of Jan Cordes for her dedication to maintaining an informative and attractive lobby for the Moraga Library. Since 1997,this Moraga Friends board member has booked monthly displays that showcase the activities of community groups,maintained the lobby bulletin board, and organized the distribution of community flyers and other handouts. The Library and the community at large have benefited from her hard work. Margaret and Martin Thornton-In recognition of Margaret and Martin Thornton for their dedication to operating the Friends' Boob Shop in the Moraga Library. Thanks to their efforts in sorting,pricing and merchandising book donations, the Friends are able to raise funds that provide for the purchase of many additional items for the Library's collection. Orinda Library .Kathy Yaich - In recognition of Kathy Yach for her years of volunteering on Saturdays at both the old and new Orinda Library, for being"on call"to help at children's programs and special events,and for her willingness to do any task assigned and do it well. Pinole Library Jose Rizal Celebration Committee: Nervy Bautista, Mel B'ulseco, Linda De Vera, Edna l imalanta, Fran Fiel, Aurora Guingon, Ray Gui goo, Adele Laput, Lisa Macapinlac, Yohanna Pepa, Yvurca Pep, Jerry Ponce, Cara Salumbides, Heidi Solidum and Brenda Souza-Hudson—In recognition of the Jose Rizal'Celebration committee members for their continued dedication,hard work and support of the annual celebration. The Jose Rizal Celebration is designed to celebrate the accomplishments of Jose Rizal,a national hero to the people of the Philippines. Supervisorial District 3 Brentwood Library Diane Lee &.Marilyn Millis-In recognition of Diane Lee and Marilyn Millis for spending countless hours running the Brentwood Friends of the Library lobby book sale. Their hard work has paid off,as the book sale is the Friends of the Brentwood Library's largest moneymaker,allowing the Friends to purchase needed materials and fund many activities at the Library. Danville Library Millie Day, Charlett.Morris, Noreen Wong and Kenneth Wang- In recognition of Millie Day,Charlett Morris, Noreen Wong and Kenneth Wong for their dedication to the Danville Library. 'Their assistance in preparing the library for opening during weekday mornings,helping with children's programs,and enthusiastically undertaking other tasks is greatly appreciated. San Ramon Library Robert Sanem -In recognition of Robert Sanern for going above and beyond the duties of a volunteer book and audio-visual mender for the San Ramon Library. During 2002, Robert Sanern repaired and returned to circulation a total of 427 books with an initial value of$6,351. Many of these books would have been lost forever to the library patrons had it not been for`his dedicated work and ingenious methods of repair. Robert is an invaluable member of the San Ramon Library Team. 0ABOSWolanteer recognition 2002.doc ty Partners Report Contra Costa County Library 2002 Annual Volunteer Communi .May 6, 2003 Page 3 Walnut Creek Library .lane Houser-In recognition of Jane Houser for her clear vision of the role the library has to play in the life of the community and the importance of the Friends of the Library in realizing this potential. Jane brought her gift for creating community to the revitalization of the Friends of the Walnut Creek Library. In the nine years since she first joined them, she has played a leadership role in the emergence of the Walnut Creek Friends as a vital community partner with an active Board of Directors and more than 140 volunteers. Ygnacio Valley Library Terry Gass -In recognition of Terry Goss for her belief that libraries are essential to the well being of a democratic society and must be freely available to everyone to further their life goals and creams. Terry Goss has ably led the Friends of the Ygnacio Valley Library for many years. She was instrumental in the creation of the Contra Costa County Library Commission and the Friends Council. Terry Goss is respected by the library community for her exceptional organizational skills and commitment to libraries. The Ygnacio Valley Library and all libraries in Contra Costa County are immeasurably enriched by her contributions. Supervisorial District 4: Central Library Minna Mae Jacobson- In recognition of Minna Mae Jacobson for her outstanding commitment to the Central Library in Pleasant Hill. Minna Mae is an enthusiastic supporter of the library whose volunteer activities include delivering large print books to convalescent homes, assisting the Friends of the Pleasant Dill Library with maintaining their ongoing book sale in the library lobby, and cleaning and mending children's books. Minna Mae is truly an inspiration to all who are fortunate to know her. Catherine Prato-In recognition of Catherine Prato's dedicated service to the Collection Development Department since 2000. Catherine's assistance with sorting and filing invoices and unpacking and checking in new books,provides valuable support to this very busy department. Clayton Library Clare Rogers, Larry Rogers and Louise Wall-In recognition of Clare Rogers,Larry Rogers and Louise Wall for their dedication to the Clayton Community Library since February 1995. During this time, Clare has contributed 1,538 hours shelving books in the children's section and assisting patrons with the self-check machine; Larry has volunteered 1,319 hours shelving books and straightening shelves; and,Louise has contributed 1,050 hours tutoring students in the Homework Help program,shelving books and coordinating publicity for the Clayton Community Library. Concord Library Lee Reimers-In recognition of Lee Reimers for her outstanding support of children through her many years serving as a Book Buddy volunteer reading to children after school. In recognition also of her special efforts to support Concord Library's Monday night Family Programs. Shelley.Russell-In recognition of Shelley Russell for her flexibility in taking on any task assigned, including shelver, shelf-reader and recycles; and for taking time from her busy high school schedule to consistently help out at the library four days a week,year round. Library Administration Anita Balin and Chris Liem-In recognition of Anita Balin and Chris Liem, student volunteer, for the assistance they have provided Library Administration office staff. Anita's accuracy and perseverance has resulted in a savings of staff time and the increased accuracy of a database project. Chris takes on every task from filing to data entry to stuffing envelopes. Thank you,Anita and Chris,for your attention to detail,positive attitudes and your valuable contributions to the Contra Costa County Library. Project Second Chance ,Sarah Beline ..In recognition of Sarah Belinge's commitment to Project Second Chance and to the adult literacy student to wham she has contributed over 700 hours of volunteer service, we honor Sarah Belinge for her patience, creativity,dedication,devotion and persistence. Wise and generous, Sarah finds the time and energy to reach beyond her role as a tutor,mentoring new volunteers and participating in the program's many special events. Sarah's calm, steady,compassionate nature and her willingness to go the extra mile are an inspiration to us all. 0:130SWolunteer recognition 2002.doc Contra Costa County Library 2002 Annual Volunteer & Community Partners Report May 6, 2003' Page 4 Reach Out and Read Zhuori Owyang- In recognition of Zhuori Owyang for her commitment to English As a Second Language learners and to the development of literacy in young children by participating in the library's Reach Out and Read program,offered in partnership with the Centra Costa County Health Clinics. Supervisorial District 5: Antioch Library Linda Locke& Randy Lung-In recognition of Linda Locke and Randy Leong for their assistance to the Friends of the Antioch Library. Linda's dedicated leadership,ideas on book sales, newsletters,membership and fundraising is greatly appreciated. Randy has spent countless hours maintaining the used book donations,which has increased the success of the Friends book sales,thanks to his dedication and hard work. Pittsburg Library Chevron "Week of Caring" Volunteers:Julie Bonini, Nancy Formoso,Althea Lawson, Shirley Rice, Janice ,Spahn and Lilian Uy- In recognition of the Chevron Week of Caring volunteers,employees of Chevron Texaco, for enabling the Pittsburg Library to reach out beyond library walls to the Pittsburg community by preparing and delivering to the front doors of 170 homes packets containing library card applications and information about library programs and services. Turing the Volunteer Center of Contra Costa's Week of Caring they have undertaken this task with enthusiasm and with a spirit of teamwork for two years in a row. Stories To Go Wendy Anderson, Sandy Brehmer, Patricia Earle, Fran Hehnke, Barbara Hannafan and Donna fykrantz- In recognition of the hundreds of hours they have spent presenting storytimes to pre-school children in Oakley, Pittsburg, Martinez and Concord. Through their volunteer work,they have created an important connection between the children and the library!
