FISCAL IMPACT None BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS The objective of Bike to Work Day is to encourage County commuters to try bicycling to work on this occasion by offering a variety of events such as drawings for prizes and energizer stations throughout the County. Once individuals try bicycling to work it is hoped that they will continue to commute by bicycle to work one or more days a week. Bicycling is an excellent form of exercise, non-polluting and an energy efficient form of transportation. Contra Costa County is participating in events to help promote Bike to Work Day and encourage County employees and the general public to participate. Energizer stations providing refreshments and educational materials to Bike to Work Day participants will be located at the Martinez Amtrak station as well as at a variety of sites throughout the County. In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO.2003/317 RECOGNIZING WEST CONTRA COSTA COUNTYS FIRST COMMUNITY SUMMIT DEDICATED TO ONE TRUTH,MANY TEACHINGS: PROFOUND CONVERSATIONS ON HIV DISEASE. Whereas,20 years after the fast clinical evidence of AIDS was reported,it has become the most devastating disease humankind has ever faced,affecting every facet of society;and Whereas,more than 60 million people worldwide have been infected with the virus,making it the fourth biggest killer in the world;and Whereas,Since December 31,2002,2347 men,women,and children living in Contra Costa County have been diagnosed with AIDS,thousands more are estimated to be living with HIV;and Whereas,West Contra Costa County remains to have the highest number of residents with AIDS;and Whereas,in many communities,HIV/AIDS remains taboo issue forcing many living with the disease to keep their health a secret from their fainily,friends,and colleagues;and Whereas,in those same communities,religion and spirituality are highly respected;and Whereas,religious and spiritual leaders are key links in conunnit ies that are highly itnpactedby HIV/AIDS and have the influence to change attitudes,-perceptions,and stereotypes of residents living with HIV/AIDS so they are accepted in their community;and Whereas,on Saturday,May 17,2003,the West County AIDS Task Force will be hosting a community summit at Lovonya Dejean Middle<School in Richmond to foster beneficial discussions with key religious and spiritual leaders about the impact of HIV/AIDS in their community and turn those discussions into action. Whereas,John Camp began his professional career helping others in need shortly after high school in 1966 where he became a VISTA Volunteer and worked with children and families in poverty in Stateville,North Carolina; and Whereas,John Camp's tireless crusade to help others has taken him to countries in Africa,Asia,and Europe before settling in the Bay Area in the mid-1980's where he continued to work with clients with developmental disabilities,first in San Leandro,and later for Contra Costa County;and Whereas,at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the early 1990's,John Camp left a secure career with Contra Costa County to pursue a new career serving people with AIDS,and Whereas,as the first Executive Director of AIDS Community Network,John Camp sought and obtained funding for and developed Tranquillium,a multi-faceted community program of activities and services dedicated for people with AIDS in West Contra Costa County,which provides a safe,compassionate place for individuals living with AIDS with comfort,companionship,food,dothin&and access to other service providers;and Whereas,in 1997,John Camp became the Executive Director of Diablo Valley AIDS Center in Concord where, under his stewardship,has become a major component in Contra Costa County's service delivery system;and Where", . John Camp's dedicated pursuit to bringing human services to people in need has won him praise, recognition,and gratitude from groups and organizations including the Center for Applied Local Research,the Institute for Noetic Sciences,the George Miller West Award of Appreciation,Developmental Disabilities Award, for Outstanding Contribution,Coming Home Hospice Certificate of Appreciation,Contra Costa Association for Retarded Citizens,and the Daniel R.Keenan Award for Contribution to Human Services,and Whereas,his personal philosophy of respect and love for everyone and his belief in the worth and dignity of each client whose life he touches,John Camp has enriched the lives of countless residents in Contra Costa County while successfully advocating for individuals with HIV/AIDS,and Whereas,after years of working for the betterment of others,John Camp is now retired,dedicating time for himself and pursuing personal goals. NOWTHEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County honors and recognizes John Camp for his unwavering commitment to the residents of Contra Costa County and presents this resolution to him at the Faith Summit on HIVIAIDS in Richmond, California on Saturday,May 17,2003.
