In Contra Costa County ) RESOLUTION NO. 2003/187
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County recognizes that children are its most important resource, and it
is they who will shape and fulfill the County's future; and
4WEREAS, each day in the United States, more than three children die as a result of child abuse
in the home; and
WHEREAS, most children who die as a result of child abuse are younger than six years of age, in
fact, more children age four and younger die from child abuse and neglect than any other single,
leading cause of death for infants and young children; and
WHEREAS, the number of child abuse reports has groom steadily for the past decade with the
total number of reported cases nationwide increasing 45 percent between 1987 and 1999. This is
cause for great alarm and a need for inch-eased protection and improved services for abused and
neglected children; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County recognizes that preventing child abuse requires the joint efforts
of medical, educational, social and criminal justice agencies, as well as active participation by alert
and well-informed citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, BELTRESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors does hereby declare
April 2003 as C&(dAhuse Prevent-ion Month in Contra Costa County and urges all citizens
to dedicate themselves to the continuing need to combat abuse at every level.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on April 81 2003 by a unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
