In the Matter of Declaring May 2003
as Motorcycle Awareness Month
in Contra Costa County RESOLUTIONNO. 2oo3/Y9.fi•
WHEIEAS, the safe operation of a motorcycle requires the use of special
skills developed through a combination of training and experience, the use of
good judgment, and a thorough knowledge of traffic laws and licensing
requirements; and
WHEI:EAS, there are 5.5 million motorcycle owners in the United States
with 3.9 million registered motorcycles accounting for 1.9 percent of all motor
vehicles registered for use on public roads in the United States; and
WHElr;EAS, motorcycle riding is a popularform o recreation and efficient
)f
transportation for more than 400,000 people in California; and
WHEN, it is especially important that the citizens of Contra Costa
County are aware of motorcyclists who are sharing the streets and highways
with automobilists.; and
WHEREAS, the safety hazards created by automobile operators due to the
difficulty of seeing smaller objects on the roadways; and
WHEREAS, since 1986 motorcycle fatalities in California have declined by
more than 7o percent and motorcycle accidents have declined by more than 7o
percent because of increased motorcycle safety programs; and
WHEI►.EAS, the . American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education of
California (ABATE) is an organization that is actively promoting safe
increased operation, rider training, and increased motorist awareness of
motorcycles;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
does hereby declare May 2003 as MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS M01VTH
in Contra Costa County and urges both motorcycle riders and automobile
drivers to follow the rules of the road so all citizens will remain safe from
vehicle accidents and subsequent injuries,.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on April 15, 2003 by a unanimous vote of the
Board members present.
