SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDED ACTION_ APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Director, or designee, to APPLY for and ACCEPT the two grant awards for the Weed and Seed Program set forth below, for the period from July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002: Grantor Grant Purpas Ammmt Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Weed and Seed Core funding $225,000 Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Truancy Prevention Pilot $102,000 FINANCIAL. IMPACT- $327,000 in grant awards partially fund the Employment and Human Services Department's Weed and Seed Program. CHILDREN'S IMPACT STATF.MF.ND These grants Support the following Contra Costa County Children's Report Card outcomes: "Children Ready For and Succeeding in School; Children and Youth Healthy and Preparing for Productive Adulthood; Families that are Economically Self Sufficient; Families that are Safe, Stable and Nurturing; and Communities that are Safe and Provide a High Quality of Life for Children and Families." The Weed and Seed program provides crime prevention and intervention resources designed to positively impact at-risk youth. BACKGROUNDe The DOJ core funding targets North Richmond and Rodeo, through the Weed and Seed program of community collaboration between residents, public and private agencies. Youth outreach, pre-employment training, faith- based and other mentorship are among key program components. The OJJDP grant supports the Truancy Prevention Pilot Demonstration Project through John Swett Unified School District, which includes supportive services from the offices of the District Attorney and the Sheriff. The program targets positive attendance in the District's elementary and high schools through outreach to families and services that include field trips, incentives and awards for improved attendance and academic performance and supplies for youth and families.
