SUBJECT: Petition for Formal Recognition of SEIU Local 535 of a proposed
representation unit of Court Reporters and Chief Court Reporters
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
ACKNOWLEDGE receipt of a memorandum dated July 17, 2001 from the Labor Relations
Manager regarding a petition filed by SEIU Local 535 requesting Formal Recognition of a
proposed representation unit of Court Reporters and Chief Court Reporters.
BACKGROUND:
In accordance with Section 34-12.004 of the County's Employer-Employee Relations
Resolution 81/1165, on June 20, 2001, SEIU Local 535 filed a petition for Formal Recognition
as a representative of the employees in the classifications of Court Reporter and Chief Court
Reporter, employed by the Superior Court of California, Contra Costa County. The petition
qualified in that at least thirty percent (30%) of the employees in the proposed representation
unit signed the petition.

SUBJECT: Petition on behalf of SEW Local 535 for Formal Recognition of a
proposed representation unit of Court Reporters and Chief Court
Reporters
In accordance with Section 34-12.004 (1) of the County's Employer-Employee
Relations Resolution 81/1165, this is to advise the Board of Supervisors that on
June 20, 2001 SEIU Local 535 filed a petition for Formal Recognition of a
proposed representation unit of employees in the classifications of Court
Reporter and Chief Court Reporter employed by the Superior Court of California,
Contra Costa County.
Proof of employee approval exceeds the minimum thirty percent (30%)
requirement for qualifying the petition.
In accordance with Section 34-12.001 (2) and by copy of this memorandum,
other recognized employee organizations are advised that intervention in the unit
determination process and/or to appear on a representational election ballot
requires thirty percent (30%) of employees approval and must be submitted to
the Labor Relations Manager within twenty-one (21) calendar days from the date
of this memo.
In addition, please be advised that following the intervention process, Section 34-
12.004 (3) requires the Labor Relations Manager to review the proposed unit to
determine its appropriateness pursuant to the criterion set forth in Section
34.12.006.
