J RESIDENT'S LETTER Contra Costa Resource Conservation District was formed in 1.941 to provide an organized means for local people to carry out voluntary soil and. water conservation programs that make the best use of our natural resources. Work is accomplished through cooperative efforts with individuals, growers, ranchers, corporations, park and water districts, and other public agencies. Our federal partner, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), provides technical support for our progratns. Through this partnership,we have been providing technical assistance in the county for 59 years. Tile following are some of our accomplishments in 2000: ® Assistance was provided to 410 farmers, ranchers, and other landowners, as well as to 62 local government agencies. Advice on water quality, wetlands restoration, erosion control, irrigation systems, soils information, and compliance with rile Farm Bill were some of the areas of assistance. ® The Alhambra Creel.:Watershed Planning Group completed its Watershed Management Plan and presented it to the public. The plan describes nine management goals. The goals were developed using voluntary, consensus-based decision making, ensuring that the will of the majority was not forced upon the minority. . ® The District won funding from CALFED to support the Kicker Creek Watershed Planning Group. ® The Distri cr's C1MIS weather ,: 'I :±•;:}.•r i'ti"; • station continued to provide 9i XY information on temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspira- tion for the Brentwood area. This ,:•_ ',: information is used by farmers for irrigation system design, irrigaation CCRCD thanks its committed Board of Directors and Associate Directors for their scheduling, and integrated pest service. Pictured here are(left to right)Mitch Allen,Art Jensen,Bill Morgan, Tom management. Brumleve, Dwight Meadows,Jim Toland, and Tom Bloomfield. Not pictured are Mike Vukelich, Murry Greenlaw, Rodney Kilcoyne, and Leonard Gerry. ® The District helped to prepare successful grant proposals for the Alameda-Contra Costa Weed Management Area, a multidisciplinary group whose mission is to bring about coordination, cooperation, and action to successfully halt the spread of noxious weeds. ® The District also actively participated in the Diablo Fire Safe Council, a consortium of public, private, and government entities .with the goal of improving fire safe conditions. The District is provides a link with private landowners to inform them about fuel load management and reduction, as well as defensible space. Tile sound use and management of our natural resources in Contra Costa County is the result of the commitments of private landowners, businesses, and public land managers in applying conservation practices on the ground. We look forward to continued progress in the year ahead. Sincerely, Thomas D. 13run,leve.
