TO: Board of Supervisors

FROM: Linda Dippel, Director
County
SQA CUUN'
DATE: May 18, 2001
SUBJECT: Contract Amendment-Futures Explored, Inc.
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATIONS&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS:
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Child Support Services Director, or designee, to execute a contract
amendment with Futures Explored, Inc. to increase the payment limit by $25,000.00 to a new payment limit of
$91,000.00 to provide clerical support service from July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None. The cost of this contract is budgeted within the State's allocation to Child Support Services. There will
be no impact on the General Fund.
REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND:
In January, 2000 the Purchasing Services Officer executed a contract with Futures Explored, Inc. for the period
January 18, 2000 through June 30, 2000 to provide clerical support services for the District Attorney Family
Support Division, now the Child Support Services Department. In July, 2000 a new contract with Futures was
executed for the period July 1, 2000 through June 30, 2001.
Futures Explored, Inc. is an organization which provides training in work-related and life skills to adults with
developmental disabilities. As a supported employment program it contracts with businesses to provide paid
employment for persons with developmental disabilities. This contract and association with Futures Explored,
Inc. has proved beneficial for the department. At a nominal cost the department is able to support a community
program and in turn has been provided with exceptional clerical support, especially in areas where it is difficult to
maintain consistent staffing.
CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
Failure to approve this request would result in increased costs, high turnover in clerical staff, and more time
spent in almost continuous training. It is becoming increasingly difficult to fill and keep staff in basic clerical
functions such as filing and mail delivery. The reliability and production of the Futures staff and the nominal cost
for their clerical services are a benefit to the department both in service and fiscal savings.
