Whereas, conflict is a part of our daily lives and the necessity to access non-adversarial forms of conflict resolution is essential; and Whereas, enhancing communication skills through conflict resolution and mediation training increases the usage of alternative dispute resolution within the community; and Whereas, using formal court proceedings to resolve disputes can be costly and time consuming and may not result in a win-win solution to all parties involved; and Whereas,alternative dispute resolution serves as a valuable alternative to the court system because it empowers individuals to develop their own creative solutions in a way that is peaceful and cost effective; and Whereas, mediation facilitates and enhances the development of relationships within the community by increasing the community's accessibility to problem-solving skills; and Whereas, the Center for Human Development's Conflict Resolution Panels and the California Community Dispute Services program have unique histories of embracing conflict and facilitating new and creative solutions to problems; and Whereas, the Center for Human Development's Conflict Resolution Panels and the California Community Dispute Services program seeks to educate the community at large about the power of relationship building, so that people of all ages can transcend barriers, improve communication, and tackle any conflict at hand; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby declare the weekof June 25 - July 1, 2001 Community Mediation Awareness in celebration of our commitment to alternative dispute resolution.
