Turner Women/Minorities/Other #1 November 30, 2003 1120 Claeys Court Rodeo, CA 94572 George C Hunter, Jr. Disabled November 30, 2001 3001 Pullman Avenue #104-C Richmond, CA 94804 BACKGROUND: The Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity was established in July 1991 to serve as an advisory committee to the Board of Supervisors regarding the implementation of the County's Affirmative Action Plan, to review the Affirmative Action Program and recommend actions to facilitate attainment of the County's goal for affirmative action. The above nominations were endorsed by the Council and approved by the Internal Operations Committee at its June 4, 2001 meeting. The Committee now proffers its recommendation to the Board. M:EM.� U DATE: May 21, 2001 TO: Internal Operations Committee FROM: Emma Kuevor Affirmative Action Officer SUBJECT: Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity The Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity is recommending appointment of Mr. Richard Turner to the currently vacant seat for the community member representative and Mr. George Hunter to the currently vacant seat for the disabled member representative on the Advisory Council. Background The Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity was established by the Board July 9, 1991. The Council advises the Board on the implementation of the County's Affirmative Action Plan, Outreach Program, and Small Business Enterprise Program. The Advisory Council consists of eleven members as follows: ► two representing County management, ► two representing employee organizations, ► four representing women, minorities and other protected groups, ► one representing disabled, ► one representative of outreach, ► one representative of labor organizations. The two employee organization seats are for two year terms and are rotated as follows: Seat#1 Seat#2 SEN, Local 535 Deputy Sheriffs Association AFSCME, Local 512 California Nurses Association DA Investigators Public Employees, Local 1 Firefighters, Local 1230 AFSCME, Local 2700 The two County management seats are for two years and are appointed by the County Administrator. The other seats are for three years and are solicited by the Advisory Council. All applicants are interviewed by the Council; recommendations are forwarded to the IO Committee; and the IO Committee may appoint the recommended candidates or they may conduct their own interviews and select the new Advisory Council members. One of the Community representative member seats and the Disabled representative member seat is currently vacant. Recruitment of Applicants In accordance with the October 12, 1999 memorandum from the IO Committee to Department Heads responsible for staffing selected advisory bodies, the Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity mailed letters and applications to various community groups and interested persons. Two applications were received. (See attachments enclosed.) The applicants were invited for an interview at the April 27"' and May 18th , 2001 Advisory Council meetings. Mr. Richard Turner's work experience and numerous community activities displayed the type of commitment needed for effective participation on the Advisory Council. Mr. George Hunter's work and life experiences showed a genuine interest and concern with matters relating to affirmative action issues and disabled veterans and their families. Or Committees Application Personal Experiences, Skills, and Interests Education/Background: I believe my academic training, significant experience in the employment field, and military background make me particular well suited for a position on the Advisory Council on Equal Employment Opportunity. My post high school academic training began at the University of Maryland where I earned an Associate Degree in liberal Arts. I went on to study at the University of LaVerne in LaVeren, California resulting in a Bachleor Degree in Business Administration. Presenity, I'm a MBA candidate at the University of Phoenix with an anticipated graduation date in April, 2001. Occupation/Employer: I currently work for the State of California Employment Development Development as a Veterans Employment Representative. I have a nine year tenure in the employment field, including working as an employment representative with both local government and community based organizations. Community Activities: My community activities at this time primarily consist of assisting veterans in over coming barriers to employment and church outreach programs. I visit the Bay Area Rescue Mission periodocially to provide empolyment and training counseling to homeless veterans and their families. By and Large, I provide information and assistance in securing transitional housing, referal information on a host of supportive sercives, and veterans benefits. The church outreach programs I'm involved in assist the disabled, single mothers, and the homeless. Special Interest: Scuba diving, and people are my primary interest. My military profession as a deep sea diver is also a hobby of mind and allow me to meet very interesting people who share a common love for the ocean. In the future, I would like to use my love for diviing as a vehicle to stimulate young people interest in the ocean and the enviomment as a whole.
