RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING RESOLUTION NO. 2001/191
MAY 27-31, 2001 AS ELDER AND
DEPENDENT ADULT ABUSE
PREVENTION WEEK
WHEREAS, the California Department of Aging has declared May to be Older Americans Month
which is dedicated to actions supporting the well-being of our senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, Elder Abuse is a crime,perpetrated against our most vulnerable citizens, subjecting them
to abuse, neglect and exploitation; and
WHEREAS, in the six month period beginning in September of 1999 and ending in February, 2000,
there was a twenty-four percent increase in the number of reports of elder abuse in the State of
California; and
WHEREAS, the recent passage of the California Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection
Act (Senate Bill 2199) provides for broadened reporting of adult abuse and enhanced services for this
population; and
WHEREAS, the County of Contra Costa has acknowledged the level of expertise necessary to
investigate and prosecute the crime of elder abuse by creating an elder abuse unit within the District
Attorney's office; and
WHEREAS, Elder Abuse Prevention: A Consortium Serving Alameda and Contra Costa Counties,
has continued to provide services addressing this issue for the past sixteen years; and
WHEREAS,-the Board urges the citizens of Contra Costa to report and prevent incidents of adult
abuse.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County
does hereby proclaim May 27-31, 2001 as
Passed by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors present this 22nd day of May 2001.
