RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT.OF RESOLUTION NO. 2001/220
THE WELLNESS COMMUNITY
TO COMMEMORATE A DECADE
OF SERVICE: AND CELEBRATE
CANCER SURVIVOR'S DAY
WHEREAS, for the past decade, The Wellness Community has provided support and educational programs to
over 75,000 visits from cancer patients and their families in the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS,The Wellness Community is hosting an Open House in honor of National Cancer Survivor's Day
to celebrate a"Decade of Service" on Sunday, June 3, 2001.
WIEREAS, The Wellness Community provides a comprehensive program of psychosocial support without
charge to cancer patients and their loved ones. The Wellness Community offers emotional support, education,
and hope to combat the unwanted feelings of isolation, despair and hopelessness often experienced with a
cancer diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, The Wellness Community's premise is to empower cancer patients to take an active role in there
fight for recovery. Research supports that psychosocial support used in conjunction with conventional medical
treatment can positively improve one's quality of life and can enhance the possibility of recovery from cancer;
and
WHEREAS, the fact that having cancer can be devastating, not only physically and emotionally, but financially
as well, which is why the Wellness Community never charge for services and why outside support is critical
and appreciated. The annual operating budget of$700,000 is raised entirely through individual contributions,
special events, grants, business sponsorships and proceeds from Cornucopia, a furniture consignment shop.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
wholeheartedly supports the efforts of The Wellness Community at the June 3, 2001 Anniversary Open House
to commemorate
