IN THE MATTER OF DECLARING ' RESOLUTION NO. 2001/171
THE MONTH OF MAY, 2001
ANIMAL ABUSE/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS, the message of zero tolerance for animal abuse and domestic violence will empower the community
to join together to take measures to prevent and halt the cycle of violence that destroys relationships, families and
neighborhoods in our communities; and
WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Animal Welfare Coalition is sponsoring the Cycle of Violence: the People-Animal
Connection symposium in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States'First Strike campaign—a
national campaign to raise awareness of the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, the Cycle of Violence: the People-Animal Connection symposium will be held on May 2, 2001 between
2:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Summit Center,Bay.Room;2530.Ai iold Drive, Martinez; and
WHEREAS, since 1998, the Contra..,Costa;AriurialWelfareGoaliti�ri llas;':1?een',comprised of a variety of animal
welfare/rescue organizations. The goals.of.thts:organization is to:=''`
❖ Establish a county.-wide';,strategy to reduce euthanasia in county slelte..rs "
❖ Develop a.county.wide plan for increasing spay/neuter rates, thereby addressing;pet overpopulation:
❖ Create a cguntynetwork among animal welfare/rescue groups to foster mutual,;cooperation;
❖
Establish.':g.-cooperative working relationship with county animal welfare/rescue°groups and the Contra
Costa Cour• Animal Services agency; and
WHEREAS, thepresent membership of Contra Costa Animal Welfare Coalition,includes Corrirriunity Concern for
