SUBJECT: Name change for Substance Abuse Advisory Board County
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
CONSIDER changing the name of the Substance Abuse Advisory Board to the Alcohol and
Other Drugs Advisory Board of Contra Costa County. DIRECT the Clerk of the Board to make
appropriate revisions in the Maddy Book as recommended by the Substance Abuse Advisory
Board.
BACKGROUND:
Per letter attached, during our meeting held on January 24, 01 the Board voted unanimously
to recommend to the Board of Supervisors to consider changing the Board name to conform
to new developments in the field that recognizes addiction as a disease and the abuse of
alcohol to be as costly to society as the use of illegal drugs.

George Renworth We are extremely pleased to announce that at our last monthly meeting held on January 24, 2001, the
Ellen Peterson Substance Abuse Advisory Board voted unanimously to change its name. Our new name is Alcohol
and Other Drugs Advisory Board of Contra Costa County.
District 3
Jodi Riley The Board conducted several forums on this topic which included clients, providers and people in
Eileen Kerr recovery. The Board also reviewed recotrunendations from the field to institute language that
Tom Aswad recognizes addiction as a disease and the abuse of alcohol to be as costly to society as the use of
illegal drugs.
District 4
Harold E. Parsley The new name reflects the Board's broader n fission to address family and corninunity concerns
