SUBJECT: April 24 Presentation to New Green Businesses
We have 22 new Green Businesses (for a grand total of 68) to recognize at the Board
meeting on April 24. While many of these are auto repair shops, four of them are
printers, including the San Francisco Chronicle. And to once again show that
government is walking the same walk as the private sector, we are also recognizing
three public fleet maintenance facilities: the Cities of of Pittsburg and San
Ramon, and the U.S. Postal Service.
All of these facilities are in compliance with our environmental agencies: Hazardous
Materials, the local fire departments, the stormwater programs, the wastewater districts
and the Air District. They have also gone beyond compliance by implementing
measures to conserve resources (water, energy and solid waste) and prevent pollution
from hazardous materials/wastes. PG&E and either Contra Costa Water District or
EBMUD have audited each shop in this process.
We will once again be asking each of you to present the Green Business Program
decals to each business in your district.

Background on the Green Business Program
1. Goals of the Program: The overall goal of the program is to encourage
businesses to do work which protects the environment and to recognize those
businesses for doing this. Specifically, they must do two things:
• Be in compliance with all environmental regulations from fire,
wastewater, stormwater, Air and Hazardous Materials; and
• Implement measures that go beyond compliance to conserve
resources in the areas of solid waste, energy, water and hazardous
waste.
We began the program with auto repair shops in 1998, expanding into
printers in 2000; restaurants, dry cleaners and auto body shops are
possible next industries.
2. What Shops Receive: They receive a very attractive plaque, 10" window decals,
use of the logo in their advertising, recognition in our agency newsletters, local
newspapers, etc. This publicity will begin with the recognition ceremony.
3. Partners in Implementing the Program: In addition to working closely with trade
associations, we have been working collaboratives with many partners from
wastewater, stormwater, fire, Air, Haz Mats, solid waste, the water companies,
and PG&E:
