Resolution No. 2001/ 152
Subject: In Honor of Darrell Mortensen
For his 35 years of service to the
City of Walnut Creek
WHEREAS, Darrell Mortensen started working with the City of Walnut Creek in November
1965, as part-time Recreation Department employee, and holds a master's degree in Park and
Recreation Administration from San Francisco State University.
WHEREAS, Darrell Mortensen became full-time as Recreation Coordinator in February 1966
and served as Recreation Superintendent from 1968 to 1976.
WHEREAS, Darrell Mortensen became Public Services Director in 1980, and in his capacity
has overseen street, sidewalk, building maintenance, parks, open space and leisure services
programs. In addition, Darrell has helped foster development, expansion, and public use of
many important programs, including; 2,900 acres of open space, two community gymnasiums,
several city parks, youth soccer and basketball programs, the adult softball program, Boundary
Oak Golf Course, the Gardens at Heather Farm, The Shadelands Ranch Historical Museum
and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum.
WHEREAS, Darrell Mortensen has also helped nurture the development of the Walnut Creek
Aquanuts synchronized swimming team, whose members over the past 10 years have
received gold medals at Summer Oylympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and Atlanta.
WHEREAS, Darrell Mortensen will be missed by his co-workers and the residents of Walnut
Creek for his warm, friendly, self-effacing attitude and for his hard work in significantly
improving the quality of life for citizens during his 35 years with the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra
Costa County commends and thanks Darrell Mortensen for his invaluable
contributions to the people of Walnut Creek and Contra Costa County. We hope
that he will continue to be actively involved in community affairs, and we wish him
the very best in years to come.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present of this
24th day of April 2001.
