SUBJECT: STOP THE VIOLENCE FORUM County
PRESENTED BY THE HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
1. AUTHORIZE the Human Relations Commission to sponsor and conduct a
forum/seminar to be held April 28, 2001:
2. APPROVE AND AUTHORIZE the Employment and Human Services Department to
expend up to $800.00 for costs related to the forum such as snacks for attendees.
BACKGROUND:
The purpose of this event is to provide information and a discussion arena regarding family
violence, youth violence, hate crime and potential partnering solutions to the problem of
violence in Contra Costa County. Speakers from the FBI and a number of experts from police
agencies within Contra Costa County are scheduled to speak as are experts from the areas of
Elder Abuse, Child Abuse, Domestic Partner Abuse, Abuse to the Physically-Challenged,
Drugs, Gangs, School Violence, Street and Community Violence, Hate Crimes involving Race
and Sexual Orientation. In addition, the FBI will present proposed school curriculum on hate
and violence. This is meant to be an all-day event from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be held
at Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon. Numerous groups have expressed interest in this
project ranging from Congressmen and Congresswomen to school groups, the faith
community and specific interest groups in the county. It is anticipated that 350 people
(maximum for the room) will be in attendance at this event.
Kaiser Permanente has offered to defray the cost of the rental of the room at the school. The
cost of printing programs has been donated and many other donations of items/services have
been received.
