I believe you should change your policy and put some of that$9 million per year into fighting tobacco in our county. Please respond. V® CENTRAL CONTRA COSTA COUNTY UNIT April 10,2001 PcOSjP01g0S CIERKBONSRA Supervisor G. Uilkema Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors 651 Pine Street Martinez, CA 94553 Dear Supervisor Uilkema: Alameda County recently committed $1 million from their first share of the tobacco lawsuit money to fight big tobacco's influence. In fact, all nine Bay Area Counties, except Contra Costa, have pledged some Master Settlement funds for local anti-tobacco programs. It just makes good sense both economically and from the standpoint of public health for Contra Costa County government to also show support for tobacco prevention programs such as education, cessation and enforcement. Each dollar spent on prevention saves much more in treatment costs, not to mention needless human suffering. The money available to our communities to fight tobacco use is dwindling as tax money from cigarette sales drops due to lower consumption. However, the tobacco companies are spending more and more in California to promote themselves and their products. More than ever, they need to get more young people to use tobacco. It's great news that cigarette use is down a bit, but bad news that programs to get people to stop or not start tobacco are shrinking or have stopped all together- from declining funds. We urge the County Board of Supervisors to join with other enlightened counties in using at least some part of the tobacco lawsuit settlement monies to continue the fight locally. The health and well-being of present and future Contra Costa residents hangs in the . balance. It would seem that the Board of Supervisors would want to cant'on its good work of the past and leave a legacy—a legacy not of dropping the ball and letting Big Tobacco further its agenda, but of good health that comes from not using any deadly tobacco products. What would be a better legacy than knowing future Contra Costa generations will live healthier lives because their Supervisors invested in tobacco prevention programs. We appreciate your consideration and support.
