LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN FOR THE
SPECIAL OLYMPICS, JUNE 7, 2000
WHEREAS, Since 1984, law enforcement officers have logged over 500,000 miles running in support of
Special Olympics; and
WHEREAS, This year, law enforcement officers will run in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to officially
commence the Summer Special Olympics Games; and
WHEREAS, Law Enforcement agencies in Contra Costa County will carry the torch and run for Special
Olympics on June 7, 2000; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County wholeheartedly supports Special Olympics as the world's largest year-round
sports training and competition program for developmentally disabled children and adults; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County wishes to "Join the World of Winners" and also commend the efforts of law
enforcement in support of Special Olympics.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby
proclaim, June 7, 2000, as

Mental Health Commission and appoint Aniece Jackson to complete the unexperied
term of Rachel Raimi ending on June 30, 2000.
Reappoint Aniece Jackson for a full three-year term ending on June 30, 2003.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Adopt a resolution (See Exhibit A) proclaiming May 16, 2000, Contra Costa County
Bike to Work Day.
FISCAL IMPACT
None to the County.
BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
The objective of Bike to Work Day is to encourage County commuters to try bicycling
to work on this occasion by offering publicity, a drawing for prizes, and energizer
stations. Once they try bicycling, it is hoped that many participants will continue to
commute by bicycle one or more days a week. Bicycling is a healthful, nonpolluting,
energy-saving mode of transportation that offers great dividends to both the user and
the community.

SUBJECT: Proclamation for Bike to Work Day 2000
The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa RESOLVES that:
WHEREAS, breathing clean air is vital to healthy lungs and life;
WHEREAS, the County of Contra Costa acknowledges that cycling to work is a
successful rideshare mode to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce air pollution and
reduce dependence on oil; and
WHEREAS, bike-to-work days have proven effective in converting drivers into
bicyclists and educating citizens about the environmental importance of biking to work
regularly; and
WHEREAS, the County of Contra Costa encourages its citizens to bike to work,
in order to improve air quality and promote the health benefits of cycling; and
WHEREAS, cities and counties throughout California are promoting Tuesday,
May 16, 2000, as a statewide bike-to-work day; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra
Costa County, recommend that Tuesday, May 16, 2000, is Contra Costa County Bike-
to-Work Clay.
