HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05022000 - SD6 i6r) TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM: Anne Cain, Acting County Librarian DATE: April 4, 20010 SUBJECT: Request for Authorization to Apply for a National Leadership Grant for Library Museum Collaboration SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the Acting County Librarian to apply for on behalf of the San Ramon Branch Library a National Leadership Grant of $223,496 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for Library-Museum Collaboration. The three partners, the Contra Costa County Library, the City of San Ramon and the Blackhawk Automotive Museum, will design and implement an oral history project focused on the personal memories of automobiles and music between 1900 and 1940, Our Cultural Legacy, Fart 1: Cars and Music(1900— 1940). FINANCIAL IMPACT: No matching funds are required. In-kind donations, primarily staff time, will be contributed by the partners in this project: the Contra Costa County Library (the San Ramon Library), the City of San Ramon and the Blackhawk Automotive Museum. The Contra Costa County Library will act as fiscal agent for the project. BACKGROUND: The San Ramon Library,the San Ramon Senior Center and the Blackhawk Automotive Museum share a common interest in preserving and making available cultural oral history in order to link people to ideas, to their community and to the past. The goals of this project include creating an oral history of our culture that will have national impact and increasing the participation of seniors in the cultural life of the community. Outcome objectives include: • Preserving the cultural memories and experiences of senior citizens • Increasing knowledge and understanding of our cultural history related to automobiles and music from 1900 to 1940 • Disseminating the oral history productions to a local, regional,state and national audience;and • Increasing the involvement of seniors in museums and library activities Through this project, 10 seniors over age 70 from the San Ramon Senior Center will participate in videotaped interviews about their personal experiences. Project outputs are expected to include: 1) a 58-minute video; 2) four viewing stations; 3) videos for the library's collection and for schools; 4) CD-ROM produced from videos; 5) transcripts and audiocassettes of interview sessions for the library; and 6) booklets of senior writings about music and automobiles for distribution. The Library, Senior Center and Museum have worked together on projects in the past. They each have their own strengths and clearly complement each other in their goals to educate, inform, enlighten and entertain the people they serve. Together they create a strong team, which reaches many different parts of our population. This project is the beginning of a long-term project that will create a new educational resource for the community. This oral history video collection will help preserve our heritage and give context to today's experiences.
