Accept the Contra Costa County Library 1999 Annual Volunteer Report 2. Acknowledge and honor the recipients of the 1999 Contra Costa County Library Volunteer and Community Partner"Special Recognition Awards." BACKGROUND: Pro-ect Second Chance Tina Steele, Families for Literacy, Head Start Story Time Volunteer, in recognition of her commitment to Project Second Chance and the Families for Literacy Program. Her on-going efforts to help adults read and write better, while fostering a love of books in their children, moves us closer to the goal of literacy for all Project Second Chance Computer Room Tutors, Jim Fede, Ken Bellingham & Luis Morilla, in recognition of their perseverance, flexibility, expertise and patience. Their commitment to improving the computer- assisted instruction that PSC has to offer Our adult literacy students is moving us all into the 21st century. East County Antioch Library: Gloria Biglow, Dotty & Doug Graham and Louis Acerra,(Friends of the Library and Library volunteers) and Eliza "Tommy" Sensmeier, President, Friends of the Library & Library Commissioner, in recognition of their hundreds of hours and years of dedication to the Antioch Library. These individuals help with book sales, fundraising, mending, shelving books and an assortment of activities which show the community they deeply care about the library. In addition to her regular volunteer assignment, Thelma participated as a story reader in the 1999 Oakley Holiday party. She is a wonderful reader and the children love her. Oakley Library Oakley Community Patrons, in recognition of the Oakley Community and their combined effort, including the Friends of the Oakley Library, Oakley Leo Lions Club and community patrons, to move the Oakley Library to the new joint-use operation at Freedom High School. Pittsburg Library Ted Dudiak, Friends of the Pittsburg Library, in recognition of his hard work, expertise and book knowledge, his concern for libraries, and his wonderful sense of humor that is a morale booster for all. Central Coun#Y Central Library in Pleasant Hill Elaine Grab, Central Library Internet Docent, in recognition of her outstanding work as an Internet Docent at the Central Library since November, 1996. In her capacity as an Internet Docent, she has also volunteered to assist the Youth Services Librarian at her quarterly "Internet for Children and Their Parents" programs for the past three years, making both children and adults feel comfortable asking for help. In addition to being an Internet Docent at the Central Library, Elaine also volunteers as a docent at the Clayton Community Library and she is a Books for the Homebound volunteer. Clayton Community Library Mamie Malcolm, Foundation member and Library Volunteer, in recognition of her meticulous work and numerous assignments at the library, including checking in of new magazines and newspapers, developing magnetic sign holders for the magazine shelving; tracking office supplies; maintaining monthly volunteer hours for 150+ Clayton Library volunteers; and, for coordinating the successful campaign to reach a total of 500 members for the library's Fifth Birthday Celebration on March 4, 2000. Cynthia West, Student Volunteer, in recognition for her enthusiasm, dependability and leadership skills. Cynthia has volunteered for two years, accumulating over 145 volunteer hours helping to recruit and train new student volunteers, dressing in costume for holiday events and special occasions and for helping to coordinate students for the Clayton Community Library's first-ever entry in the Clayton 4`h of July parade. Cynthia has also been nominated to the Countywide Youth Commission "2000 Youth Hall of Fame" as a valiant volunteer for her many contributions to the Clayton Community Library. Martinez Library Winnie Gegan, Volunteer Book Mender, in recognition of her dedicated service to the library and community of Martinez for the past two years by extending the lives of the books in the library's collection. South County Danville Library: The Danville Library Volunteer Group, in recognition of all of the volunteers as a group, because they have made the whole greater than the sum of all the parts. It is with all their help that the library is able to operate so smoothly. Each volunteer contributes to an aspect that helps the library and makes it possible for the staff to concentrate on other responsibilities. San Ramon Library: Shirley Alpert, Tobey Bolles, Kathleen Ma, Cindy Wu, Ernie Scherer & Peggy LeMahieu, Book Drop Volunteers, in recognition of outstanding service to the San Ramon Library by fulfilling the unique volunteer job of "Book Drop Volunteers." Your daily duty of clearing the book drops and checking in the materials allows the San Ramon Library to keep it's book drops open for extended hours which provides a valuable service enhancement to San Ramon residents. Walnut Creek Library: Russian Collection Volunteers, in recognition of their generous donation of time, expertise, books and service by the Russian Collection volunteers at the Walnut Creek Library who are by their efforts making the library a resource for all Russian speakers and learners in our community. oAboslvo1-1999.doc 3/30/00 'CONTRA COSTA COUNTY LIBRARY 1999 ANNUAL VOLUNTEER&COMMUNITY PARTNERS REPORT Page 3 Lamorinda Lafayette Library: Gladys Laston, in recognition of her significant contribution to the success of the Friends of the Lafayette Library Book Sale Room. Gladys, who volunteers several hours each week for the Friends of the Library, is a tireless worker who is willing to tackle a variety of tasks. Most outstanding is the fact that Gladys was part of the effort to build the current Lafayette Library in 1,962 and her commitment to volunteerism continues to benefit the Lafayette community today. Moraga Library: Elsie Mastick, in recognition of her continued dedication to the Moraga Library since 1982. She has assisted in a variety of ways including shelving materials, maintaining the pamphlet file and processing materials. She has processed all of the unaccessioned paperbacks for the adult collection for six years, has served two terms on the Friends of the Moraga Library Board, and is an active member of the Historical Archives staff. Elsie's remarkable energy makes her a highly valued volunteer who is integral to our operations. Orinda Library: Marjorie Batchelder, in recognition of her years of enhancing the appearance and atmosphere of the Orinda Library with her flower arrangements and gardening expertise. She provides flower arrangement and house plants for the library and comes faithfully once a week to care for the plants, which have thrived thanks to her green thumb. West County EI Cerrito Library Hy Binger, in recognition of his dedication to working with children in their formative years and for acting as a positive male role model by participating as a "Book Buddy" read-aloud volunteer for the past two years. EI Sobrante Library: Mary Tom Coe, in recognition of her very faithful service to the EI Sobrante Library for more than four years. She has provided tremendous assistance to the Youth Services Librarian by developing folders for each of the California Missions, which has been greatly appreciated by grateful parents. In preparing for the re-carpeting project at the library and subsequent reorganizing, she updated other pamphlet files, is making a new list of subject heading and assists the Children's Librarian in a variety of ways. Pinole Library: Adrian Putra, Student Internet Volunteer, in recognition of the reliability and consistency he provides the Pinole Library as an Internet Docent. Adrian is a volunteer upon whom the staff depends and appreciates. Wilruss Trust "Stories To Go" Program Stories To Go volunteers sere the communities of San Pablo, Concord and PittsburglBay Point. San Pablo: Marlene Gee, Pauline Huerta, Jane Power, Carolyn Sherwin, Valborg Thomas and Doris Weeks Concord: Ginnie Dolby, Claudia Miner, Pam Campbell, Linda Lucas, Diane Wats and Joan Gates. PittsburglBay Point: Joan Hodgkin, Pam LaVallee and Mildred Patterson In recognition of their loyal and continuous service to the children of these communities. these "Stories To Go" volunteers bring books and services and instill the love of reading to children who might not otherwise be able to benefit from the resources of the library. Teens in Transition Internet Mentor Program Internet Mentors, Vince Garcia, Steve Steinbrecher, Steve Ancheta, Brain Baker, Claudia Starks, Tony Hawkins, Carol Trammell, Anil Pillai, Roger Bonte, Susan Hunter, Karen Feld In recognition of the dedication and enthusiasm these citizens have displayed in volunteering their time and energy with a unique population; the incarcerated youth of Contra Costa County. The volunteers in this unique program, offered in conjunction with the Contra Costa County Probation Department, visit the detention facilities on a weekly basis as Internet mentors, working one-on-one with a troubled adolescent population. They guide the youth in their exploration of the Internet, helping them find more effective means of accessing the information and encouraging them to assess the accuracy of what they find. oAbos\vo1-1999.doc 3130100
