Klute DATE: March 7, 2000 PAGE: 2 III. Reasons for Recommendations and Background: Many departments within Contra Costa County have identified specific needs for GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications which will allow them to answer questions that, to date, they have only been able to ask. These answers will allow the departments to better serve the pudic. The foundation for any GIS effort is the land base. The Public Works Department maintains the County Basemap in digital CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) files. A GIS coordinator within the Public Works Department will facilitate both the conversion of the County Basemap into a GIS format and the development of sophisticated GIS applications. IV. Consequences of Negative Action: A negative action on this item would severely impair all county efforts for GIS development.
