Home My WebLink AboutMINUTES - 03282000 - P1-P4 TIDE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS 7 r OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA Proclaiming A Season for Nonviolence } Silent Walk for Peace } RESOLUTION NO. 2000/131 9WEREAS in October 1999 it was recognized that Contra Costa County needed to respond to "A Season for Nonviolence,"January 30"through April 4''an annual event commemorating the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King,Jr.; and 'EREAS Contra Costa County needs to help bring public awareness to concerns of victims of violence and make a direct impact on peace in Contra Costa County the Mt. Diablo Peace Center established a committee for A Season for Nonviolence; and HWEREAS nine times more children in the United States are killed accidentally by firearms than all European countries put together and in the state of California four homicides are committed each day and in Contra Costa County there were fifty-eight homicides committed in 1999; and EREAS violence takes many forms on the street, at school and in family life; and there are many kinds of violence: physical violence, psychological violence, socioeconomic violence, environmental violence and political violence; and HWEREAS, the community recognizes that this violence touches our families and everyone`s life; and Community groups in Contra Costa County, Mt. Diablo Peace Center, Survivors of Murdered Victims and the Contra Costa Health Services Community Wellness &Prevention Program, believe that violence is evitable and believes that nonviolence can be taught at all levels; and WHEREAS beginning January 30" to April 4", a period of 64 days has been declared A Season for Nonviolence, internationally by the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation, honoring their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world, and WHEREAS; A Season for Nonviolence will kickoff and culminate with observations at the United Nations in New York City and observances in hundreds of cities and other locales around the globe; NOW, 2WEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we the County Board of Supervisors for Contra Costa County proclaim January 30 -April 4, 2000, as A SEASON FOR NOAWOLENCE and encourage all citizens to participate in local, national and globally educational and community action campaigns, to honor those who are using nonviolence to build communities that respect the dignity and worth of every human being;and NOW, I'HERERORE, IT IS RESOLVED,, that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors declare April 2, 2000, a day dedicated to making a direct impact for peace with a walk commemorating observation for nonviolence and loved ones lost to violence. I . ...................................... ................... - .:..... .............................. ...................................................................................... por ::fix er m # ak 0 k� d J ' THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA IN THE MATTER OF HONORING ) Jerry Fender for His Years of ) RESOLUTION NO. 2000/132 Service to the Contra Costa County ) Fire Protection District ) WHEREAS, Jerry Fender has retired at the end of March, 2000, after 35 years of service to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District; and WHEREAS, Mr. Fender began his career as a Firefighter and promoted through the ranks of Senior Firefighter, Training instructor, Fire Captain, and reached his ultimate rank of Training Supervisor in November, 1973; and WHEREAS, Training Supervisor Fender has been dedicated to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and has been a knowledgeable, diligent and articulate Chief Officer of the District; and WHEREAS, the Fire Commission, the Fire Chief and the employees of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District wish to express their respect, admiration and appreciation for his service and support. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors honors and acknowledges Training Supervisor Fender's 35 years of service to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and wishes him health and happiness in his retirement. Tonda, Risk Manager, and expressing } appreciation for the contribution he has made to ) the County of Contra Costa and his profession } during 14 years of service } RESOLUTION NO. 2000/129 Whereas, Joe, as Risk Manager, laid the foundation for the Office of Risk Management that has become a model for serving local governments, acting as a resource for Departments and protecting the financial, physical and human assets of the County of Contra Costa; and Whereas, in 1991 Joe served the County in an additional capacity, as the interim Employee Benefits Manager; and Whereas, Joe has given time and energy to his profession by being a founding organizer of the Public Association of Risk Managers (PARMA), an organization dedicated to the risk management concerns of public agencies; and Whereas, the Board wishes to recognize Joe's service on the Board of Directors of the California State Association of Counties — Excess Insurance Authority, a joint powers authority created to address the insurance and risk management needs specific to the counties within California and having received their award for his contribution to the Inter-Public Entity Litigation Cost Containment Program; and Whereas, the Board acknowledges Joe's efforts and the fiscal acumen required to maintain the integrity of the County's self-insurance trust funds; and Whereas, the Board wishes to recognize Joe's role in nurturing professionalism and maximizing productivity in the office of Risk Management; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa does hereby publicly recognize and express its appreciation to Mr. Tonda for the fourteen years of service he has given; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Joseph J.
