The Honorable Ms. Donna Gerber, Chair

Southampton Shoal Channel Deepening Project
Dear Ms. Gerber
We would like to express our support for the County's efforts to secure Federal Fiscal Year 2001
Budget funding for the revaluation the Southampton Shoal Channel Deepening Project by the
Army Corps of Engineers. Deepening the Southampton Shoal Channel will provide for more
efficient transport of oil tankers in Contra Costa County and the San Francisco Bay by allowing
more fully loaded ships to proceed to off-loading facilities. The increased efficiency will
promote less ship traffic and lightering in the Bay resulting in a reduced potential for safety and
environmental incidents.
Chevron owns and operates the Richmond Refinery in Contra Costa County and would benefit
from a deepened Southampton Shoal Channel. The Refinery imports all of its crude oil and
exports refined products via tankers that arrive and depart our marine terminal (Richmond Long
Wharf, RLW) through the Southampton Shoal Channel. Products exported over the RLW are
distributed throughout the Chevron retail system in Northern California, Oregon, & Washington.
The RLW is an important asset that has operated in the Bay since 1902.
Again, we support your efforts to secure federal funding for the revaluation the Southampton
Shoal Channel Deepening Project. If we can be of assistance please contact Mr. Donald Kinkela
at(510)242- 3308.
Sincerely,
Ms. Donna Gerber
