Gilbert, Director of General Services Contra Costa DATE: March 21, 2000 County SUBJECT: ACCEPT DONATION TO GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT OF AN EMERGENCY BACKUP GENERATING POWER SYSTEM SPECIFIC REQUESTS OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. RECOMMENDED ACTION: ACCEPT donation from Gotpower, Inc. (Cal Diesel) of an Emergency Backup Generating Power System(GP2000, Serial #001). II. FINANCIAL IM ACT: This Emergency Backup Generating Power System, which is valued at $22,500, is designed for traffic intersections. This generator will provide back-up power for traffic signals and can allow traffic to continue traveling smoothly through intersections during a power outage. This gift will benefit the public and staff who would have to respond if signals are out. III. BACKGROUND: Staff from Cal Diesel designed a prototype generator to be used at intersections to provide emergency power back-up in the event of a power failure. This unit is being installed at the intersection of Treat and Oak Grove in Concord, which is a busy intersection. Such units will likely be considered for future use at the busiest intersections to keep signals working during power outages. Cal Diesel graciously donated this unit to allow the County to test its viability in keeping traffic signals working during a power outage at a major intersection.
