LEWIS ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT WHEREAS, Howard W. Lewis is retiring from his position of Labor Relations Manager on July 9, 1999 after twenty years of service to the Bay Area Rapid Transit District; and WHEREAS, the people in the County of Contra Costa are mindful of the valuable work done by Mr. Lewis in promoting and facilitating equitable and effective labor management relations by representing and balancing the interest of the Bay Area Transit District employees, managers, governing bodies and customers; and WHEREAS, MT. Lewis is recognized by his staff and colleagues as an inspirational and proactive leader for his many contributions in the labor relations field; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis is respected by the employees of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District for his expertise and ability to foster and nurture in others the development of creative and innovative ideas in promoting labor peace; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis is well regarded by the community as a teacher and neighborhood mediator bringing persons of diverse interests together to find mutually acceptable solutions. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa, California, does hereby express sincere appreciation and thanks to Howard W. Lewis on the occasion of his retirement from the Bay Area Rapid Transit District in recognition of the loyal and dedicated service which he has contributed over a period of twenty years. U�ifkema,BTstrict 11 Donna Gerber strict III Mark DeSaulnier,District IV Jo� p�qAciAilla, Chair, District V lrliue t�►mk t off' !i%AX] aX-V1 to Certiricmte cs:f Ck3►==i4exxdiatI43oilL Resolution No.99/319 W43t acj�e qr<*x-p ,� Ct�x r d lei xa3tlx WHEREAS,Joe Torp and Conrad Smith remained devoted to each other for 44 years, until Conrad Smith's death in 1994;and WHEREAS; Joe Torp taught art at Antioch High School for 31 years and Conrad Smith taught speech at Pittsburg Junior High School for 15 years; and WHEREAS, in 1988,after retirement,Joe Torp and Conrad Smith:became lead activists in The Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators (BANGLE) and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays JPFLAG) where they became an inspiration to all those who worked with them,and WHEREAS,Joe Torp and Conrad Smith, through their work as co-chairs of BANGLE,were instrumental in providing the county's schools and libraries with educational materials about homosexuality that exposes youth to positive contributions made by gays and lesbians throughout the centuries, and WHEREAS,Joe Torp and Conrad Smith have expanded the positive climate for gays and lesbians in high school by actively supporting the Bobby Griffith Memorial Scholarship,awarded annually to a Centra Costa County High School Student who has enhanced the understanding and acceptance of gay and lesbian students;and r. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors does hereby commendJoe Torp and Conrad Smith for their enthusiasm, involvement and dedication.
