PARTNERS REPORT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Accept the Contra Costa County Library 1998 Annual Volunteer Report
2. Acknowledge and honor the recipients of the 1998 Contra Costa County Library Volunteer and
Community Partner"Special Recognition Awards."
BACKGROUND:
East County
Antioch Library:
Riverview Garden Club, In recognition of the Riverview Garden Club for upholstering and re-storing over
eighty seven chairs, thereby enhancing the interior of the Antioch Library. We appreciate all of your 680+
hours of hard work and dedication!
Friends of the Antioch Library, In recognition of the Friends of the Antioch Library for their tireless hours of
hard work, fund-raising and dedication in improving the library for the community. The new reference desk
will provide service for many years to come. We appreciate all of you!
Pittsburg Library:
Pamela LaV flee, In recognition of Pamela LaVallee for her commitment to the Pittsburg Library "Book
Buddies" read-aloud children's program since June, 1996. Because of Pamela's enthusiasm and
dedication to working with children she was invited by library staff to participate in a community storytime
event. Additionally, she has recently become one of three new volunteers participating in the Wilruss Trust
"Stories To Go" outreach program in Pittsburg childcare facilities.
Long's Drugs, In recognition of Long's Drugs store in Pittsburg, and especially Bob Coupe, store manager,
for donating $505 to the library for children's programs at the Pittsburg Library.

Lamorinda
Orinda Library:
James Harvill, In recognition of the many hours he has volunteered over the past three years as an
Internet Docent at the Orinda Library. He has shown many library patrons how to use the Internet and has
helped many find desired information in electronic format.
Orindans for Art Support in the School, In recognition of the volunteers who have hung student art work in
the Orinda Library. This project has provided recognition for talented student artists and has brightened
the library walls.
Central County
Central Library in Pleasant Hill:
Local History File Volunteers: In recognition of faithful and conscientious assistance in the ongoing effort to
clip, index, and preserve newspaper articles covering local and Library news. Through their contribution of
time and attention, the Library is able to provide ready access to this valuable, unique resource.
Clayton Community Library:
Raymond Dod, In recognition of Raymond Dod, for his leadership in setting up a unique Genealogy
Workstation. Mr. Dod converted library hardware from the obsolete SIDS database into a suitable platform
for CD-ROM use, applied to the Clayton Community Library Foundation to obtain their generous funding of
over $1000, purchased the opening collection of over 50 genealogy CD-ROM's and the equipment for
safe and efficient storage of the materials, wrote the user manual, basic operating instructions and
bookmark, and trained volunteers, staff and patrons in the use of the Workstation.
Concord Library:
Mt. Diablo Women's Club, In recognition of the Mt. Diablo Woman's Club who donated money towards the
purchase of materials for Concord's Children and Young Adult collection.
Concord Library volunteers, In recognition of the individual volunteers who come in on a regular basis to
mend books, shelf read, process withdrawn books, teach people how to use the Internet, update the
community bulletin board and maintain the book sale table.
!Martinez Library:
Patty Lorrick and Martinez Leisure Services, In Recognition of Patty Lorrick and Martinez Leisure Services
for their support and partnership. They co-sponsored and paid half the cost for several children's
performers at the Martinez Library, cooperated with us for series of evening programs throughout the year
where they led a craft project in the library after a storytime and publicized all library programs in their
newsletters."
South County
Glanville Library:
Sandra Paiva, In recognition of her service to the Danville Library we would like to recognize Sandra for
her commitment to volunteer service. Her organizational expertise provides us with outstanding, well
trained volunteers.
Don and Sharon Ritchey, In recognition of Don and Sharon Ritchey for their generous gift of The Ritchey
Technology Fund to the Danville Library. Their gift has enabled the expansion of computer resources
including Internet terminals, ten new printers and two CD-ROM terminals which have reference resources
than are used in the library.
Ygnacio Valley Library:
Mrs. Anna Cee and her 3rd grade class at Walnut Acres Elementary School. In recognition of
extraordinary community spirit and support for the library by Mrs. Anna Gee and her 3rd grade class at
Walnut Acres Elementary School who raised money by recycling cans and bottles and by transforming
their classroom into a "Kids Cafe" for a day complete with murals, tables, floral decoration and student
waiters who served breakfast and lunch to delight family and friends. All the proceeds were donated to the
Katherine Sundquist Learning Center, a special section at the Ygnacio Valley Library that provides books
needed by school children for their class assignments.

Walnut Creek Library:
Ristorante Salvatore: In recognition of dedicated support for the library by Ristbrante Salvatore in Walnut
Creek which has provided the charter business donation to the newly formed Walnut Creek Library
Foundation by sponsoring a second annual benefit dinner, a wonderful evening of good food, live
entertainment, and talks by members of the Walnut Creek City Council and Elaine Corral made possible by
the gracious hospitality and public spirit of the proprietors, Angela Alagna and Salvatore Piccone.
West County
EI Cerrito Library:
Albany-El Cerrito Masonic Lodge, In recognition of the Albany-EI Cerrito Masonic Lodge for their
leadership in bringing together the community partners needed to install new landscaping and exterior
grounds improvements on a shoestring budget at the El Cerrito Library, and in recognition of the Masonic
Lodge, the Friends of the Library, the City of El Cerrito staff and council members, Rotary of El Cerrito, and
Marvin Collins Construction Co. for contributions of funds and labor.
El Sobrante Library:
El Sobrante Rotary, In recognition of the El Sobrante Rotary for their constant support and for making the
library the focus of their annual fundraising project for the past three years.
Pinole Library:
In recognition of the West County Times, Mechanics Sank, Rotary Club of Pinole, and Hercules Lions Club
for co-sponsoring the Annual Teen Writing contest for the 9th year in Spring, 1999, with free advertising
and publishing of winning entries by the West County Times and cash prizes for nine finalists provided by
Mechanics Sank, Rotary club of Pinole, and Hercules Lions Club, and in recognition of Francine Welstand
who has funded the printing and distribution of published booklets of the winning entries for the last three
contests.
San Pablo Library:
San Pablo Old Town Committee In recognition of the San Pablo Old Town Committee working long and
steadily with the San Pablo Library to provide community information and to build strong relationships with
the local community.
San Pablo Community Foundation, In recognition of the San Pablo CommunityFoundation for supporting
a strong library meeting the needs of a diverse community,
Kensington Library:
Business Partners of the Kensington Library, In recognition of the Business Partners of the Kensington
Library supporting attractive and entertaining programs for everyone at the Kensington Library,
Project Second Chance:
Joe Garcia, In recognition of his years of service to Project Second Chance, the Contra Costa County
library adult literacy program wish to acknowledge Joe Garcia for his contribution as a student, tutor
trainer, fund-raiser and volunteer board member. His generous donation of wisdom and time are
appreciated by all who are working hard to read write better.
