In the Matter of Resolution No. 99/1.65
Proclaiming April 1999 as
"Khalsa Month" in Contra Costa County
WHEREAS, There is a large Sikh community in Contra Costa County; and
WHEREAS, The Sikh Festival, Vaisakhi, is celebrated every year in the
month of April and signifies the beginning of the agricultural New Year and
is accompanied with festive songs and dances, and
WHEREAS, 1999 marks the 300#x' anniversary of the Vaisakhi Festival,
which embodies among others, the ideals of hard work, equality of all
humankind, and compassionate service; and
WHEREAS, Vaisakhi celebrates a community in which social status would
be dissolved, and everyone would be recognized as equal by the fact of
their humanity, this includes the mistreatment of women, which the Sikh
community proclaims equal to men in every respect- political, social, and
religious; and
WHEREAS, In the Vaisakhi Festival of 1699, an established order of
Sikhs, the Khalsa, was formed to dedicate themselves to the high ideals of
the Sikh Gurus; and
WHEREAS, The 3001" Celebration of Vaisakhi will bring communities from
all over the world to Contra Costa County, and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of
the County of Contra Costa, State of California, does hereby declare April
1999 as Khalsa Month in Contra Costa County in honor of the Sikh's 3001n
Vaisakhi Festival Anniversary.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 13th
day of April.
