Whereas in 1,994 Contra Costa County had the 6th highest rate of anemia in
California, ands
Whereas Contra Costa Nealth Services Pubfitc Wealth Division's ChildHealth and
Disability Prevention Program conveneda first-of-its kind-Anemia Task Force,
an,-
Whereas the Task Force participants included the Contra Costa Food Bank, the
'Women, Infant and Children (WIC)food suppCement program, UC Cooperative
Extension Program, Headstart, and the Contra Costa County ChiCd Care
Council The Community WelCness Prevention Program, including the Lead
Poisoning Prevention Project, Contra Costa Health Plan, Foundation 3-lealth,
Inc., the Contra Costa County Boardof Supervisors, Contra Costa Regional
,vedicaCCenter andClinics and'others, and;
Whereas this unique coClaborative effort with public andprivate agencies
determinedto reduce the rate of chiU oodannemia by two percentage points per
year untdContra Costa County reachedthe "HeaCth People 2000"objectives of
10%for low-income children under 5 years ands%for older chitd-ren,',and-
Whereas the Boardof SupervisorsproclaimedFebruary 1997 "..Anemia
Prevention.Nonth,"and;
Whereas the .Anemia ?ask,Farce designed and imptementeda campaign about
the problem of iron-deficiency anemia and the need to eat iron-rich foo4-
proposedpolicy changes and trainedmedicalproviders, and;
"Whereas more than 100 organizations in Contra Costa County particpatedin
the community education campaign, and-
'Whereas the overadrate of anemia in Contra Costa droppedfrom 23% to 17%
between 1994 and1996 andthe county's ranking droppedfrom 61h to 25t":
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOXTED that the Contra Costa County Boardof
Supervisors commends the .,Anemia Task Force for its outstanding effort, and,•
BP ITFL1RTHER RBSOL"VBD that the Contra Costa County Boardof
Supervisors applauds the .anemia Task Force's recut of a Syeciaf Achievement
Awardfrom the California Department of Health Services, NaternalandChild
Health Branch.
