Dear Members of the Board.
Al McNabney Memorial
Al McNabney, former member of Mount Diablo Audubon, passed
away on May 1, 1998 after a brief illness. He was well known as
a man with a passion for birds, creatures and places which could
not speak for themselves . He shared this passion freely, and
spent countless hours working on behalf of wildlife and natural
resources at hundreds of meetings and workshops in the Bay Area.
He transformed his passion into action and: made it his vocation
to speak out, serving as a role model for many who knew him.
With his gentle and humble demeanor, he was well known as someone
who could quietly redirect a meeting with a simple phrase .
When someone of Al ' s character passes on, we are compelled
to honor this person for their commitment . Though he was a very
private person, he sacrificed a great deal in his life to make
our collective and public life better for everyone. one of Al ' s
most cherished campaigns was the protection of the "Shell Marsh, "
which is visible to millions of people each year as they drive by
on Highway 680 or Waterfront Road in Martinez . His personal
connection to this site spanned many years : from his efforts to
prevent its destruction from private development; his concern in

1988 when crude oil spilled into its waters, to his ceaseless
vigilance at the endless meetings of our Management Advisory
Committee to ensure it would be managed according to his vision
of public trust, to his ability to raise additional funds for
interpretive purposes; the marsh was a constant part of his life
for over 15 years .
As members of the Shell Marsh Management Advisory Committee,
we have had the honor of working with Al on a personal basis. We
agree that there is no better way to acknowledge Al ' s
contributions to our project than by renaming this valuable piece
of wildlife habitat the "McNabney Marsh" and erecting
interpretive panels in his honor.
We respectfully request that your Board or agency adopt a
resolution supporting designation of the marsh as the "McNabney
Marsh" and participate in a ceremony to honor the memory of this
dedicated person who worked tirelessly to protect it .
4S*ncerely,
chael E. Rugg
Chairman
Shell Marsh Management
Advisory Committee,
