Dear County Board of Supervisors:
The City of Pittsburg has been working closely with the County and the Contra.Costa
County Fire Protection District for many years to construct a new fire station known as Station
87 on West Leland Road at John Henry Johnson Drive. This facility is urgently needed to
provide fire protection services to the Southwestern portions of the City. Response times to
many areas in the Southwest of our community are unacceptable and the station must be
constructed''and staffed to meet this need.
Pittsburg has waited patiently for the fire station to be built. We have revised
Redevelopment fundingagreements, agreed to administer the construction and bidding process
for the project, and passed through$1,699,218.23 to the District. We have been out to bid twice
on the construction of the station, only to be told not to proceed by the fire district. We feel we
have demonstrated good faith and a good deal of patience.
The fact remains that the City of Pittsburg, the Consolidated Fire Protection District and
the County of Contra Costa have a contract. That contract requires a fire station to be built and
staffed in the City of Pittsburg. We understand that the District is facing financial challenges that
will require time to work through and we are willing to be an active participant in that process.
However,we feel our contract requires that the construction of Station 87 ;o forward and that the
Redevelopment pass-through funds from the City of Pittsburg be used to provide staffing.
