APPROVE THE 24th AMENDMENT FOR KAPLAN/MCLAUGHLIN/DIAZ
MERRITHEW MEMORIAL HOSPITAL REPLACEMENT PROJECT (WH580B)
III . BACKGROUND (continued)
duress alarm buttons, relocate an existing electrical panel and
modify chilled water piping. There are two large changes : the
addition of a loading dock and the redesign of the service entrance
from the lower campus . After construction began, the hospital
changed the way it supplied the hospital . To reduce future staffing
costs, the hospital has converted to a supply exchange cart system
which requires the daily delivery of restocked supply carts and the
removal of depleted carts . The hospital' s current loading dock is
some distance from the replacement hospital . In order to assure
efficient distribution of exchange carts, a new loading dock at the
new hospital is needed.
The service entry to the hospital needed to be redesigned in order
to provide a less steep access ramp for hand pushed carts and hand
trucks, and to avoid extensive remodeling to the existing Crisis
Unit (E Ward) . The original design required the relocation of the
ward' s second exit . Relocating this exit would require that the
building be brought up to current code, requiring extensive
remodeling that would have to occur in an occupied facility.
Relocating the replacement hospital' s service entry was less
disruptive and less costly than remodeling E Ward.
