SUBJECT: CONTRA COSTA COUNTY LIBRARY 1996 ANNUAL VOLUNTEER REPORT
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
1. ACCEPT the Contra Costa County Library 1996 Annual Volunteer Report
2. ACKNOWLEDGE and honor the recipients of the 1996 Contra Costa County Library
"Volunteer of the Year," "Pair of the Year," and "Group of the Year" for their dedicated
volunteer service to the Contra Costa County Library.
Library Volunteer of the Year 1996: Helen Pearlstein, Danville Library, and Thelma
Fontana, Antioch Library
The 1996 Volunteer of the Year award goes to two exceptional volunteers:
Helen Pearlstein, Danville Library. In recognition of her more than ten years of volunteering at
the old and new Danville Library, for her efforts to get the new library constructed, and her
many efforts to make the Danville book store such a success.
Thelma Fontana, Antioch Library. In recognition of eighteen years of dedicated support of the
Antioch Library. Thelma has been responsible for raising nearly $100,000 for various library
projects and programs, extended library hours and new carpeting for the library.
Library Volunteer Pair of the Year 1996: Bill West and Gil Paig_ett, Internet Docents at EI
Cerrito Library
In recognition of the long term dedication of this pair to the introduction and teaching of
Internet skills to students of all ages and backgrounds from the community at large, their
assistance in particular search projects, and their contribution to the public image of the library
in the community.
Library Volunteer Group of the Year 1996: Project Second Chance Tutors with 1,000
Hours or more
In recognition of more than 27,500 hours of volunteer service to Project Second Chance,
fourteen active literacy tutors have made an indelible mark in establishing the value of the
volunteer as a dependable, appropriate partner in the day-to-day operation of libraries:

Teen V lunteer Group of the Year 1996: Oakley Leo Lions
In recognition of the Oakley Leo Lion's dedication and commitment to enhance the Friends of
the Oakley Library's Book Nook by selecting, sorting, weeding, organizing and cleaning up the
books for a beautiful addition to the library.
Teen Volunteer Pair of the Year 1996: Natalie and Doug Tabacco, Orinda Library
In recognition of their faithful volunteer efforts on Friday afternoons and for assisting the
Friends of the Orinda Library at books sales. Every year the Tabacco's host a booth at the
Fourth of July, earning money for new children's books at the library.

Circulation Volunteers; Friends of the EI Sobrante Library; San Ramon Shelvers (Karen
Jones, Carmen Luttringer, Janet Pence & Tessie Percy).
BACKGROUND:
In 1996, more than 1,000 library volunteers, 120 Project Second Chance tutors, Library
Commissioners and hundreds of Friends of the Library members contributed 95,000 hours to support
the library by enhancing library services, assisting staff, enriching the lives of adult learners_ and
addressing difficult library issues. The hours donated represent a 15% increase over the previous
year.
Annually, the County Library honors its outstanding volunteers. The Board of Supervisors will have
the opportunity to honor the Contra Costa County Library "Volunteers of the Year 1996."
