In the Matter of Resolution No. 97/292
HONORING MARY GRIFFITH FOR
HER TIRELESS EFFORTS AS A
GAY AND LESBIAN YOUTH ADVOCATE
WHEREAS, Mary Griffith has done extraordinary work at local, state and national
levels to open minds and hearts to the struggles of gay and lesbian youth; and
WHEREAS, after the suicide of her son in 1983, Mary began to share her story of
Bobby's life; and
WHEREAS, Mary's testimony before the California Board of Education in 1992 helped
to persuade the board to approve inclusion of information about gay, lesbian, and bisexual
persons in textbooks; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Griffith continues her educational work with Parents and Friends of
Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG) and Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators (BANGLE);
and
WHEREAS, on June 26, 1997 Mary Griffith's remarkable journey of advocacy for
sexual minority youth will be honored by Contra Costa County's gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender community at the Rainbow Center's first annual Honors Night.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Contra Costa, California, do hereby extend sincere congratulations to Mary Griffith for the
honor being bestowed upon her and for her unselfish dedication to the education of our
communities.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 17th day of June,
1997.
