Although some services exits to help young mothers, fathers must learn the responsibilities of fatherhood. We believe teaching young fathers parenting/family living skills and. providing mentors to help them carry out their responsibilities will greatly improve the quality of life for themselves and their children. This project will break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and dysfunction that tends to plague teen parents. TARGET: The Mentorship Program for teen boys should involve family members and troubled teens throughout the county. This is because, the teens we will be working with are in the County Juvenile Justice System; and, the families and the .trained volunteers (mentors) will be from those corresponding areas-as much as possible. OBJECTIVE: The men that volunteer for the Mentor training program will be upstanding citizens in the community, noted for their reputation as patient, fair, possessing good people skills, and knowledgeable about teen issues. GOAL' The Mentor will receive 18 hours of training, and will have bi- weekly contact with the Mentor-Coordinator to discuss the mentor/mentee relationship. The Mentor will also attend monthly staff meetings, and will be asked to spend a minimum of 1 hour per week with his Mentee. Also, the Mentor will keep a log of the student's progress. young, jailed dads will get guidance on Darentng s s Times staff teen pregnancy,Frazier said A new program is being launched Frazier, who also runs the Contra Costa Birthing Project, will run the to help teach parenting skills to fathers program. :.: young fathers m Camra Costa The program will provide men- County jails.- toring and parenting classes..It will The program, called Young Men focus on young men,but some as- as Fathers,is a joint project among will include the county office of education, the women the mothers ects of of the children California Youth Authonty and the whose fathers ore'm IaiY Family Wellness Center in Concord. «The ina not want to be part- _".The point of the education is to, y , y number one,", young`men post- ners in a long relationship;but if they pone their decision to become fathers have consistent parenting skills it's if they're not.already and, number just that more beneficial to the child, two;if they are fathers to learn how Frazier said to carry out the=responsibility,"said The project will target incarcer- Carrie Frazier, executivedirector of ated young men in the.County Jail the Wellness Center in Martinez and at the Orin Allen It will be run from the.Wellness Youth Rehabilitation Facility in By- Center, with.a s9o,00o grant from the ron, formerly,Byron Boy's Ranch., Youth Authority.:The goal is to pre Recruiting volunteers and setting vent child.abuse:and neglect, and up classes is underway el me in 'ailfb e o d da( s ven under the best of circum hall, ages 8 through*18,already have stances, being'a good parent is a children, and it's hoped other partici- challenge.
